R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
few days ago, after i watched 2 hours of movie with WIn XP,suddenly it went off~~!
I smelled burnt on the bottom of R51....
when i open the optional RAM cover, the RAM label is melted already..
so i disassembled the machine...found that both RAMs' label has been melted slightly..
i've done some searchings on the net...checking the voltage using multimeter....
1st,i checked the ac adaptor voltage rating.it was 16.5V..
next i connected it to the dc jack of laptop...i checked the voltage on the joint to mobo..the reading was 16.5V too...so i assume it's nt bcoz of the DC jack failure...
one thing to add, whenever i try to connect ac to laptop,i hear small "tick" sound.....nt from the laptop speaker...
asking for help from you guys..
before this happened, there's one chip fell off fr the mobo....i didnt solder it,jz put it bac in plave & use something to pressed it....
nw my query:i put bac one RAM to the slot & try to boot with batt,i hear one small beep sound fr the speaker...
it doesnt sound like the ordinary beep code...where the 1 beep doesnt last for 1 sec i think......
and i measured the voltage at the solder point of the fallen chip, its reading is 16.2V.....
can anyone here give yr opinion regarding to this matter..?is the mobo dead permanently?
can it still be revived?coz it's ancient machine already...i dun think the laptop specialist at my vicinity will repair my IBM~~ =(

Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
If you stop using those stupid abbreviations and omissions, people might actually be able to READ your post!
First thing to do: put back whatever piece fell off the motherboard.
Make sure it is in the right spot, the right way around, and that it is soldered properly.
Until then, your laptop is unstable and will only get worse.
Once that piece is back in place, find the spot where the "tick" comes from.
Possibly it's no longer there, because the above piece is now OK.

Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
the ticking sound comes from the dc jack i tnk..bt the voltage reading at the jack is nrmal i presume..?(16.5v)
Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
anyone...?
Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
no one?
Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
Had to go back to your original post to find out what the question was. Only found this one, two part question:
However, I'm still very curious about that piece that fell off...what was it?
My opinion is...yes the board is toast, and not worth the time and expense required to trouble shoot and attempt a repair, when new or guaranteed refurbished boards can be had for ~$40-50.hlyh1230 wrote:can anyone here give yr opinion regarding to this matter..?is the mobo dead permanently?

Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
It's always the case..."it was working fine until it broke".
There is absolutely no way a computer will function normally with pieces missing from the motherboard. Doesn't matter how small they are...they are not insignificant.

Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
Beeps indicate that there is something wrong. Use this guide to diagnose:

Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
i have compared,it's nt in the beep code list that i recognize..the beep is continuous, and only when booted with battery...no beep sound if booted thru ac power source...
Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
That piece that fell off the motherboard might just be a power circuit inductor, and putting it back in place just might be the solution. If you'll post a picture of the part, someone here might be able to tell you exactly what it is.

Re: R51 Overheated,Cant Turn On
ok..i'll post d pic..but,the chip fell off already b4 this occasion happened....the r51 used to have failure to boot ...the cause was the GPU.....then i accidentally made the chip fell off,and afterwards i just used something to hold the chip.......so i think its nt the problem....
