T42p reflow not going so great at the moment..

#1 Post by Morten » Tue Nov 06, 2012 9:48 pm

So, I followed VisionViper's guide http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=57021 to the letter with thermometer, temp ramps and all. Problem is now that I've fitted everything back in the chassis and hooked everything back up, it looks like I've made it worse and quite possibly killed the poor thing.

Symptoms:
- Battery LED will light up green, then orange to indicate it is charging
- Then pressing the power button, the battery light goes out
- I get no fans spinning or any other signs of life

Is there something I could have missed?

I don't have any screws in yet, but pretty sure everything is hooked up inside the chassis. No spare parts with wires left over.

You ruined it. It is easy to overheat the chip (you have to have heat gun with variable temperature and display).

I have reflowed more than 100 boards easily and over the few years I have found out that you have to use a good BGA flux and controlled reflow profile (pre-heat, then melt temperature, then cooldown). Just a week ago received two FireGL T2 boards and reflowed them, both work 100% good. One of them had red epoxy dots at the corners, you have to carefully remove them with a sharp knife or scalpell.
