combining R52 base with T42p screen?

#1 Post by ilakast » Mon Nov 12, 2012 2:23 pm

The closest I could get to any relevant post was the 14.1" T41/R51 Frankenpad (Intel GMA 900), SXGA+? so if this has been asked before let me know.

Having inherited a few thinkpads from edik I am now looking at possibilities to get the most out of them.

T42p (2373-HSG) has an issue that I cannot resolve as yet but apparently a working IPS screen. R52 (1846-AQG) has no screen at all but hopefully has a working motherboard (haven't tested it yet). Could the 64MB ATI Radeon X300 drive the T42p screen and are the pins compatible? I have all HMMs but no clue as to what I should be looking for :roll:

Yes...the R52 board can drive the UXGA screen no problem. You will, however, need the UXGA ribbon cable to stay with the screen, and I think there might be some difference between the T and R series cables (length, I think), so best bet might be to put the R52 motherboard in the T42p chassis.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Just in case: the T43/R52 uses different CPU and RAM, that is NOT compatible with the T40/T41/T42/R50/R51.
And if your R52 has a 1394/Firewire port, there is no opening for it in the T4x base.
In a 15" T4x you could cut a small 'matching' hole with an Xacto knife or Dremel (between PCMCIA flap and fan exhaust).
Also, the fan from an R5x is higher/thicker than the T4x fan, so reuse the T4x fan (it will fit).

Thanks for the tips.

Unfortunately the project came to a halt, the R52 has a power on password. Following lenovo's steps wasn't succesful. I booted with an external monitor, did not try the T42p screen at all. I am not very confident that edik will know the password, so if I don't post again that's going to be the reason...

Not feasible to get the R52 booting in the near future, so would a R50e be able to drive that IPS screen instead?

For your password woes, contact forum member poshgeordie in Newcastle.
The R50e only supports XGA.
