Yes, that's the only way you're going to know for sure that the antenna is there.

In that manual, on (page 201 or 206**) there is a chart.. in that chart (section 5 or section 4**) there is a reference to the 'bluetooth wireless antenna assembly'.. the model numbers of all the t43's that ship with that part (the bluetooth antenna) in it are listed there.. If yours is one.. your puter has that part.

if ya wanna confirm, undo the screws on the bottom of your puter that hold your keyboard down, pull that sucker up, and look for the cable... (that procedure can be found in that same handy document referenced above) if you're gonna install the bluetooth card you'll atleast have to go that far anyway, so the practice will do you good.

*note, there may be a seperate HMM for the t41/t42.. you can find it on the ibm site.

**the 15inch model has a seperate listing this is the page and section for it.

2687DDx (X = Anything)
2687DDU = Bluetooth ok!
Also, would this void our warrantys?

FYI: 2687D3U has bluetooth antenna lead

#36 Post by dkkim » Thu Jun 23, 2005 7:18 pm

Hello All,

This thread was very helpful to me in my pre-purchase
decision. I did end up buying a 2687D3U (nice machine!).
This is not listed as having a bluetooth antenna in the
manual (referenced in the very helpful link earlier).

However, upon inspection, I found a Bluetooth antenna
lead tucked away under tape underneath the modem
("Communications Daughter") card.

YMMV, but I hope this helps someone.
I bought 2687D3U because it had nearly everything
else I wanted and was available at Buy.com.

Best,
dkkim

2687D3U success

#40 Post by dkkim » Thu Jun 30, 2005 6:17 pm

Just an update:

Installed the CDC with Bluetooth on-board (Part#: 39T0022).
Downloaded the IBM/Widcomm stack. Works like a charm! Nicely
integrates with the Access IBM Connections control panel.
Better range/quality than the Zonet dongles I use on my
other machines.

Tips:
The price from IBM was *much* cheaper than
from 3rd party vendors. 37.50 + 13.50 + 3.58 tax = US$54.58
out the door, delivered quickly by DHL. 3rd part
price was around $120. Good customer service via
email.

The part # "FRU" stands for Factory Replaceable Unit, so I
am not 100% sure about the warranty. A lot of it comes
down to reasonability... Would be curious to hear about
others' experiences.

Cheers,
dk

Ask TP expert, does T43 266889U have bluetooth antenna preinstalled?

The tabook is a bit weird, since it doesn't list my CTO anywhere. According to IBMs website though the 2687E4U has the bluetooth antenna and in network adapters it mentions bluetooth again. Sounds to me like it's got it.

dk, thanks for the report. I've just ordered the same machine. I'm curious, did you find that the antenna was already installed, so all you had to do was install the CDC and you had internal BT ready to go?

Where did you purchase that particular CDC? I searched for the PN on lenovo's site and could only find service item hits, no purchase links.

Sorry to bug, but does 2686E7U have a built in antenna?

I checked the online manual/pdf, and I saw this:
Bluetoothwirelessantennaassembly,14.1-in.

I have the 2686E7, so I presume it has it if it lists the part number?

Edit- and what the heck is a clear plate, and how much is it? I don't see any reference to it in any of the installation manuals.

Edit2- Anyone know if this is bluetooth 1.0 or 2.0? Also, do most T43s have the bluetooth activity light LEDs built in? And does Fn + F5 work fine to disable it?

the clear plate is the shiny black part that has your wifi, numlock, hard drive activity and battery lights shining through it.

there's a light behind it specifically for bluetooth.. but it's blacked out on the clear plate on tp models that didn't ship with bluetooth installed.

i never bothered with the clearplate.. as i know what the state of bluetooth is in windows.

Ah cool... so it's basically to add the bluetooth activitiy light.

Does anyone have an installation/replacement guide for the clearplate or know how much IBM charges for it?

Yes, the antenna was present. I checked before ordering
the CDC card. Follow the instructions in the above-mentioned
hardware manual; you have to remove the modem card and
look under it. The antenna was looped under a piece of
plastic tape.

Note that this model is not listed in the section describing
which units have the antenna. Hence my checking it
out prior to ordering.

All I did was follow the instructions to insert the unit, then
installed the IBM Bluetooth IV driver (which is Widcomm-based).
Then, when I brought up Access Connections the bluetooth
radio was listed, voila! Pretty seemless. I am assuming
that the Bluetooth software was not previously-installed.

To find the part, I used the link and part # in G-man's helpful post (way above):
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... &langId=-1
39T0022

Hope this helps. Very happy with the 2687D3U also, by the
way. It's a nice configuration.

This might be an easier place to find the features of your model. Just click the binoculars and search for your model.

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... tabook.pdf

Don't forget the dash, as in 2687-D3U.

:?: What's the excitement about Bluetooth?. Other than sync your PDA, what does it do for you? My model did not come with a bluetooth card. (Although I understand they all have the antenna) Just wondering why I would bother adding it.

TIA

My main reasons would be to sync my phone via bluetooth, and have a bluetooth mouse without a dongle.

Internet over cellular. I keep my SonyT610 in my pocket, and my thinkpad hooks up to it, and connects to the net. simple as hell, and there's no extra hardware (like a pcmcia card) cluttering up my puter.

I read the HMM but did not see the model # I wanted listed anywhere. The HMM is listed as January 2005 and I believe the model # I want is a new model according to tabook.

Does anybody know if 2687DRU has the bluetooth antenna installed or know where I can possibly get this information? Thanks!

I don't see it listed in the HMM and since the HMM was released 1/05 and 2687DDU was released 2/05 according to tabook. How did you find out this model has bluetooth? through the HMM?

The reason you probably couldn't find it in the HMM is because the HMM was released in 1/05 while the 2687D3U was released in 3/05. Since you received ur tp and it has the bt antenna, I was wondering if all subsequent released models with the 2687 leading model have the bt antenna or not? (directly affects my purchase decision!)

Anyone knows if Bluetooth Modem CDC (39T0022) works in T40 (2373-19U)? I notice the bluetooth/Modem CDC card (91P7315) for T40 is US$88.00, US$50.00 more than the one that's for T43.

Thanks for your help.

The FRU number for the clear plate has changed. The new number is "26R8409" and it is $12 and can be ordered from the Retail Parts web page. Total price with tax and shipping for both parts is $67.88 here, so it's not the cheapest Bluetooth option, but certainly the most elegant.

I had a peek and confirmed that my 2687-DRU (built June 05) had the antenna wire in place.

Big Thanks to the informative folks on this thread!

Yeah, I noticed the clear plate part # changed as well. I decided it wasn't worth the $12, so just skipped it. Funny thing is you can see the LED light through the normal clear plate anyways.

Nice link, unfortunately I couldn't find mine 2378-DLU, I even checked the discontinued pdf. Anyways I opened my TP and did not find any cable, I guess I'll have to stick a card in if I really want this.
