Do I have the T41 GPU problem?

#1 Post by lather » Sun Nov 18, 2012 10:46 am

I've recently started having problems with my T41, and it seems from what I've read, it could be the dreaded GPU issue.

It boots up fine, and runs for a while (usually something like 30 minutes). The screen then suddenly goes black, but there's still HDD activity, as if it has gone into hibernation. However, I can't get it to come out of hibernation, and all I can do is force a hard shutdown via the power button. When I reboot the machine, I get a Windows message saying that it has recovered from a serious error and, checking the details, it says it was a video driver problem.

Thinking that the computer was hibernating due to overheating (as I'd noticed that the fan didn't seem to be cutting in and the computer was quite warm underneath), I installed a temperature monitoring and fan control program. However, this showed that the temperatures were normal, and the reason the fan wasn't cutting in was because it wasn't needed - It did kick in at CPU temperatures around 66 degrees C, but GPU temperature didn't seem to exceed around 60 degrees C.

Having apparently eliminated overheating as a possibility, I looked at other things, and the symptoms do seem to match those I've read for a loose/unsoldered GPU - The screen suddenly goes black and there's no display on an external monitor, and the computer won't come out of hibernation. The machine still gets quite warm underneath, and the heat seems to be concentrated right in the middle at the front.

So, I was wondering if anyone could confirm for me that this does indeed seem to be the usual GPU issue that the T41 seems to have? Thanks.
