Normal Boot Up / Shut Down Times
Normal Boot Up / Shut Down Times
Anyone happen to know the normal (average) boot up and shut down times are for X4x vs. X3x...or with a 4200 rpm drive versus a 7200 rpm drive? Just curious as I read that someone with a Dell X1 was seeing boot up times of more then 3 minutes....and shout down just about as long. This is, of course, using the 1.8" 4200 rpm drive and was claimed to be just out of the box.
There is no standard here. Startup for me is highly affected by:
1. Symantec Client Security getting its bearings (initial check, network connection and so on).
2. Access Connections finding out what network it is on.
3. DHCP trying to find its server.
4. Cache Sentry clearing out old cache.
5. And the list goes on.
So Startup does take me about 3 minutes and my 7200 rpm hard drive doesn't help that much.
Shutdown is normally less than a minute.

Wow,
I plan on using my new X32 (ship date 5/10/05) primarily to retrieve information at an attorney's office. I'm tried of carying boxes with me to an attorney's office.
If will seem like forever with an attorney looking at me for 2.5 to 3 minutes just to review a photo or a graph.
Will Bluetooth add to this time?
Is there any way to disable Access Connection until after you have booted, or if I have to, can I disable it in the bios? Ditto for Bluetooth.

Couldn't sleeping it and moving it cause damage, as the hard drive head may not have parked properly?DavidNZ wrote:rayfranco: you could keep it hibernated if you know you'll need it quickly. Or, sleep it. I often just put mine to sleep before I make my way to a meeting (usually in the same buildilng).

Shouldn't. If a hard drive, for whatever reason, is not parking properly when it's put to sleep or hibernated, then logically there is every reason to believe that it is not parking properly when it is shut down. Ergo, you have a bigger problem in that case!
