T42 And Advanced Format Drives

#1 Post by white avenger » Sat Nov 24, 2012 2:58 pm

Here's a simple question. I'm trying to use an A F hard drive for additional storage in a D caddy, and, of course, my XP format computer won't recognize the [censored] thing. So, here is the question:

If I change my computer's O S from XP to Windows 7, which I have been thinking about doing anyhow, will the AF hard drive work properly, or is there some physical issue with my T42 that will still make it incompatible?

Depending on the version of your T42, you might run into issues with W7, namely with the graphics card.

What's the 7-character model number on the bottom of the machine, 237?-???

Model number 2374-cto. And, of course, if my luck is running true to form lately, what I want to do can't be done with what I have.

Can you look under Device Manager and tell us what "Display Adapter" it shows?

A -CTO laptop is a "Configure To Order" laptop, therefore, the model number is not helpful in telling us what is inside of your laptop. Since there are ~ 8 graphics chips used in thinkpad T4x processors, can you please tell us *which* graphics chips may have problems in Windows-7 ?? That would be more helpful.

Here are some potential graphics chips :

ATI Radeon 7500 (16MB or 32MB) - 1024x768 T40, T41, T42 systems
ATI Radeon 9000 (32MB or 64MB) - ThinkPad T40, T41, T42 systems
ATI Radeon 9600 (64MB) - ThinkPad T42 systems (SXGA+)
ATI FireGL 9000 (64MB) - ThinkPad T40p systems
ATI FireGL T2 (128MB) - ThinkPad T41p, T42p systems
ATI Radeon X300 (64MB) - ThinkPad T43 systems
ATI Radeon V3200 (128MB) - ThinkPad T43 systems
Intel 900 (256MB) - ThinkPad T43 systems
=======================
Lots of thinkpads (10+) but I would never be so stupid as to list them all because that would spam everybody's searches and people who *do* try to list them all would be jerks.

None of these would match the 2374 model designation.

T43/p with ATi graphics have model numbers starting in 26xx and the Intel based units start with 187x.

Can I assume that since you're not answering my question, you don't know the answer? I thought so ...

And you were wrong.

I simply forgot about this thread until you reminded me of it with your condescending remark.

Radeon 7500/9000 are the problematic GPUs since there's no official driver and/or support for them in Vista or W7.

As for OP's other original concern, here's a Lenovo white paper on dealing with AF drives when using XP:
