2378FVU (T42) vs. 26694DU (T43)

#1 Post by basilio » Fri Apr 29, 2005 3:16 pm

Please help me with decision..
I'm not sure about T43. I've read that some users reported fan noise problems of T43..

Here are highlights

2378FVU (T42) by AMEX or VISA
- IBM ThinkPad T42 2378
- Pentium M 735 1.7GHz
- Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
- Graphics ATI mobility Radeon 9600 64MB
- RAM 256 MB (DDR PC2700) + 512MB = 768MB
- HD 40 GB 5400 rpm
- CD-RW / DVD
- Mdm
- LAN EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN, 802.11b, 802.11g (intel pro 2200BG)
- Centrino
- 14.1" TFT SXGA+ (1400 x 1050)
- 1 yrs warranty
- $1376 (discount by AMEX or VISA) + warranty upgrade to 3yrs ($112) + 512MB ($80) + Free port rep II = $1568 before shipping and tax.

26694DU (T43) by my University offer
- IBM ThinkPad T43 2669
- Pentium M 750 1.86 GHz
- Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
- Graphics ATI X300 64MB
- RAM 512 MB (DDR2 PC4200)
- HD 40 GB 5400 rpm
- CD-RW / DVD
- Mdm
- LAN EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN, 802.11b, 802.11g (intel pro 2200BG)
- Centrino
- 14.1" TFT SXGA+ (1400 x 1050)
- Fingerprint reader
- 3 yrs warranty
- $1600.00 before shipping and tax

Prices are almost the same. Probably T43 would have better performance.. but fan noise issue (not confirmed so far) makes me hesitate to decide..

Which one would be better...? Please help me... I've been doing search and search, but I really don't know which one is better for me..

Hi! The T43 seems to be the better deal to me! Question: What is the link the AMex/Visa site? Thanks and good luck! =)

www.ibm.com/businesscenter/amex

www.ibm.com/businesscenter/visa

You will find the discounted price and special offers....

So, you think T43 would be better deal.. However, I'm a little sensitive to noise. I've changed stock CPU fan and case fans in my desktop to keep it silent (Silent fans cost a lot :( )

I don't play game and this laptop will be used for my research work like powerpoint, word, mathematica, matlab, photoshop and etc.. So, graphic card doesn't matter to me, but heat and noise do.

And I just realized the battery time of T43 doesn't last longer than that of T42 even though the T43 battery performance is enhanced..

Which one should I choose..?

I'm waiting for for my FVU to be sent out...I did quite a bit of research and it seems like we are going to be using them for about the same things...i found the FVU the better choice for me...I also got the slimbay battery because i will need to go unplugged for long periods of time...the FVU seemed like to better work choice for me.

I see. Then how long have you been waiting for FVU ?
The website says "within 2-4 weeks" :(

It's too long...

yeah, it's 2-4 weeks...the guy I talked with said call back in a week though to see the status...I was reading that they usually over estimate shipping times just incase...as all dates they set are tentative.

yeah, it would be nice to have a close friend that works for IBM. haha, getting a job their myself might be even better. but, I refuse to work for anyone but myself or family. though maybe one day I'll apply for a job at a big company just for kicks.

I couldn't imagine having someone else set my work schedule. no earily mornings and no fridays/weekends.

Hi Basilio,

I have been back and forth with my own tpad decision for law school and have finally also narrowed my choice down to the 2378FVU. I know it is delayed for about two weeks which is bad, but what are we to do. I also agree with your fan issues with the T43 as I am also quite sensitive to fan noise.

**QUESTION:*** Where did you find the 3 year extended warranty for $112?? (One of the factors about the FVU that bothers me is the fact that it is only covered by a 1 year warranty)

Thanks!

Hopefully the mess of IBM/Lenovo webpages will be back in service by tomorrow.

Go to the thinkpad Support page and then click on "Browse Warranty Upgrades". The T42 usually doesn't show in the list of models, so just select the model number, 2378.

Yes, adding two years of depot level warranty coverage costs only $112.

James

Well, I don't know why it would be any different now than its ever been. It's always been a mess. That's one reason there's a FAQ (and a Mini-FAQ before that) - to keep track of the ever-roving useful bits. Remember the days of "Hunt the Driver Matrix"? Not to mention the nomadic Dodson pages (aka tabook and its siblings).

Now I can't even find VISA/Master/AMEX discount, http://www.ibm.com/businesscenter/visa , for Thinkpads. The Thinkpads' deal are all gone. I hope it will be back soon.

In the meantime, why don't you talk to Bill and see what kind of price he'll give you?

Lenovo has lower prices for purchases with a Visa, MasterCard, Amex., etc. like IBM did. When you go to a businesscenter website like http://www.ibm.com/businesscenter/visa there's a link on the left side of the page to Lenovo. Click on it.
Go to Lenovo's ThinkPad ThinkCentre store*
Shop for notebooks, desktops, monitors, projectors, handhelds, and related upgrades, accessories and parts.
Once you're on the Lenovo webpage you'll see a Visa logo, or another as approptiate, and be able to buy with a discount.
IBM T42 2373M3U - that's broken and needs to be replaced

Thanks for the finding. I thought VISA/Mastercard discount is temporarily gone.

In terms of price, looks like lenovo maintain the same price like IBM.
