JUST BOUGHT AN X31 28847WU

#1 Post by feejeean » Sat Apr 30, 2005 2:36 am

Hi,

Just thought I'd share my joy with you by saying that I've just bought an X31 - my first laptop too !!.

Its a 28847WU with the following config:
Pentium M 1.7 GHz, 1mb L2 cache, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD (7200RPM), 16mb RADEON, b/g WIFI, X3 Ultrabase (DVD/CDRW), 6 Cell Battery.

I can't wait to get my hands on it !!! :D

Appreciate some advice on what would be a good carry case that could accomodate the X31, including the X3 base? and what would be recommended extras to purchase as well?

Glad to finally be a part of the Thinkpad family 8)

Regards

Welcome to our Family! You've got yourself a really nice TP. Once IBM's upgrades, accessories and parts site comes back (on Sunday) look around there. Check out their TP cases.

Fiji Islands? Oh my... I wish I was there.

Hey G-Man,

Thanks - took me a hell of a long time deciding on which one to get (Sorry Bill for the headache phonecalls and emails !! )

Man !!! - I'd rather be in the US ! - they get to get all the goodies (such as thinkpads and other stuff  ) at very reasonable prices !! A thinkpad here can cost upwards of 5000.00 for an R51 (FJD approximately 0.6 of USD)

What does the nice mr. Morrow do about tax declarations, shipping etc. to European countries by the way? That's what I'm fearing... :)

Nice one! Australian IBM support is top notch, assuming that's who you would deal with if you ever ran into problems.

I'd put Windows SP2 on it immediately when you get, then firewall it, then hardware firewall using a router, then anti-v, spyboy, adaware, Microsoft Antispyware, put a power-up and hard disk password on it, and make sure you update the drivers from IBM's site. Then (!) you'll be good to go!

Enjoy that new machine...

Shipping should not be more than $75 or so. As for tax declarations, nowadays in the EU all you have ot pay is VAT, no customs tax. So if you buy a thinkpad worth $1500 (so around 1000 Euros), all you will pay is the VAT on it (usually around 20%), so it will get to 1200 Euros which is probably far cheaper than you would pay in any European country. That said, you can usually find the best European prices in Germany, so might be worth looking there as well.

Thanks Guys !! Am now "glad" with the choice I've made.

Thanks for the heads up on Oz support and recommendations davidNZ - Who u gunning for in the Rugby Super 12? (Blues supporter here)

Thanks Orbitz :) - definitely not the same as a T41P though but I guess this setup would serve me better. (If I had got the T41P I probably wouldn't get much work done - would just be playing games  )

The Blues?!?!? Nah, mate - I'm a Highlanders fan (live in Dunedin), although we lost last night to the Waratahs. Sounds like the Blues may have been the victim of Paddy's refereeing skills again. Not many people are big fans of Paddy! :)

 You can say that again ... especially here in Fiji after our 1999 World Cup game against France. Blues have a must win game next weekend against the Hurricanes (Luckily it's at home if thats an advantage) ... Contrary to what most people believe here - I feel that the Waratahs will crumble when it comes to the crunch - spent 7 years in NZ several at Massey Uni, so am quite an avid AB fan as well, (And any other team that plays the Wallabies  ). With McCaw injured, I think Josh Blackie, in his current form, is guaranteed a starting position.

Wow - never thought I'd find a Super 12 chat here! Well off topic but I'm a former X20 owner (now defunct due to an unfortunate wine episode).

I replaced it with an A31P and now more recently a T42p - which I must say is a gorgeous laptop.

I picked the T42p up at auction for about AUD2300 inc GST - so you can find good deals in Australia. Still on IBM Oz website for AUD6000.

The A31p was bought off eBay in the US - no problems - though never tried a warranty claim. Actually both our A31p LCD bezels have broken - I don't know why... doesn't effect operation though, just resale.

Nearly bought a X31 - love the size - but the T42p deal was too good to pass up.

Personally I don't think the Waratahs will fade - my prediction - a Waratahs Crusaders final - Rogers injured - Crusaders victory.

P.S. I am a kiwi so take this predicition with a grain of salt!

dct .... You just couldn't give me a break could you !! - I am on the verge of bursting into tears - 2300 AUD !!!!???. May I ask from where ?? The little conscience angel on my shoulder unsuccesfully trying to convince me to "be satisfied with what I have" Just kiddin .. that is a super deal ... thats like 1800.00 USD. dc ...

I am still crossing my fingers for my team in the S12 ... They should have a chance at semis if the key players are not missing - have to concede the Warrahs are playing awesome ..

Have a friend who bought a fully loaded t42p (60gb 7200rpm drive, 1gb ram) with dvd writer for $1899.00 Canadian dollars in November. It was an IBM employee discount supersale.

Well Canadian $1899 is really amazing - can't match that in Oz - I sit next to an IBM employee at work and he couldn't get anywhere near the deal I received - my T42p is also fully loaded (except the fingerprint reader) 1600 x 1200 screen, 1GB, DVD writer etc.

The t42p was a complete oncer - never seen one before or since on this site - it was used - though minimally - battery is still only showing 1 cycle (only had it about 10 days) and this weekend was my first chance to cut across. Open box ex-demo I think would be best description.

It was only the awesome deal that stopped me getting an X31. I've been waiting for the right deal - they've been some excellent prices on X31s on eBay lately - I'd be happy with an X31 - may still get one in fact.

Fraid after watching the Highlanders capitulate to the Waratahs I don't think they've got a hope - I'm a Blues supporter - but likewise they may make the semis but that'll be it - Crusaders our best hope. 6 yo daughter was quizzing me on why I was supporting the Highlanders when I live in Sydney - a little difficult to explain...

Cheers

David

Hey dct,

I'm in Australia and am looking at the possible purchase of an X-series IBM. What are the ways you would suggest for my purchase of one of these great notebooks?

Also, what auction did you get yours from?

Thanks for any help.

Hmmm...I'm not counting the Highlanders out just yet, but let's see how the All Blacks, I mean Crusaders, do this coming weekend... :)

Highlanders just weren't on their game this weekend. Hopefully, Crusaders have an off-game this Saturday... :)

*sigh* here's hoping...
