Thinking about buying another T61

#1 Post by hoax32 » Sun Dec 02, 2012 10:57 pm

Hi TPF.
Im thinking about buying another T61 to use it as a HD streaming media PC in my living room.
I love my current T61 and i would love to have another one - preferably with a Penryl CPU and nVidia GPU.
I found a T61 on ebay, which seems to be in nice condition.
T9300, good condition - $250 i was told that its a 08/08 model.
What do you all think about the price?
Should i go ahead and buy it?

Thanks ahead pals! :thumbs-UP:

I was gonna add multiple links and pictures of t61's on sale on ebay and ibm but remembered the picture size limit ok 50kb so i just removed it all.
anyways - does a late production t61 with a t9300, 2GB ram and a 100GB HDD sound reasonable for $250?
:)
OR should I just go with a x130e with a E450 for $390?
I will need it primarily for streaming 1080p videos.

the T9300 would be twice as fast as the CPU side of the E450, which is nothing to brag about.

the E450 GPU side is pretty decent - and would be couple of times faster than the Intel GPU in a T61 laptop, and about twice as fast as the nVidia 140M 64MB in its stock variant (14" laptop), and a bit faster than heavily overclocked 140M 64Mb (such as yours I believe). If you get the 140M in a 15" laptop then when heavily overclocked the 140M there could be about as fast as the E450 GPU side, but of course still slower in its stock variant.

if you want the T61p GPU comparison then the E450 GPU will be faster than the stock FX570 (14" laptop), but slower (thought not by much) if that one gets overclocked, as well as slower than the the stock FX570 in a 15" laptop.

I dont know if you can overclock the E450 though. Anyways, this should give you pretty good prospective of what you're getting.

To answer your question about price, that is a good deal, but only if it's an original 08/08, many aren't exactly what they appear to be so you have to be careful. I can get you a very nice all original 08/08 very close to mint condition, but it would be a bit more then the price you quoted.

If if is going to be a computer that is used heavily and it isn't going anyplace, why not a desktop PC?
In my mind most laptops are a compromise for portability, and you pay a premium for that. If you get a desktop/mini-tower you get the power at a lower price.

I think you should buy a T400 or T410 instead of a T61.Unless you like 4:3 screen.

Why bother with a t61 when you can buy a t500 or w500 for the same price. I got my t500 for $300 with win8, 8g memory and 320g hard drive
