3G service closing out.

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Thu Dec 06, 2012 1:27 am

So I heard today from someone at work said they got a letter from Verizon that their cellphone is not going to be supported soon and will have to buy a new one. Is that meaning 3G is going to be discontinued soon? I still own and like using my Motorola Razr V3m, which I think is the last up to date model of this cellphone. And I think this is 3G, I bought this new back in 2007.

I seriously doubt they're shutting down 3G. Verizon gets these brain farts on occasion and the ban certain phones from their network. I know that they did it with the HTC Harrier and the Droid. Although both were "unbanned" shortly after. I was hoping to use my Harrier when I was in the US last time, but it was a bust. Besides, this CDMA crap gives me headache.

This is just stunt they pull whenever they notice that too many people use old phones. Its a marketing thing, to force you to buy a new phone (and a bloody pricey contract).

The announcement this October claimed a 2021 shutdown, with at least a 10-year warning.
Verizon later amended their statement, stating that they have not decided on a shutdown date.

These type of shutdowns create havoc for M2M gear, and require years of advance planning.

It won't be happening anytime in the next five years.

If you haven't actually read the letter, perhaps you should do that before getting concerned. I suspect that what you heard wasn't the complete story.
