Windows 7 on X40

#1 Post by cfds » Mon Dec 10, 2012 2:10 pm

Recently installed windows 7 on my old X40.
I upraded to Win 7 Ult 32Bit to have the trim function working for the SSD.
The old X40 really fly's on 7, but I do have a few problems...
The driver for the VGA card is still missing and by the looks of it, it will remain missing from what I have seen/read on the internet.
Further, the volume hot keys, wireless hot key are not working and the OSD does not work either. Installed the hotkey driver from the lenovo site but I keep getting a failure at the first part of the installation.
Anybody having some tips/hints for me?

Thanks,

Yves

Installing the right drivers is a little bit of PITA work, a friend of mine managed to do it after several times trying these instructions: http://paulgibbs.wordpress.com/2009/11/ ... o-chipset/

Good luck!

Seems involved, found those instructions already while searching on the net but this is well above my skill level
The same for the Hotkeys and OSD problem. Found some info on the net/lenovo site about the power manager and some patches, I tried several hotkey versions/patches and power managers. When installing the hotkey driver I receive always the msg "unable to copy/place the file mkrcfg.dll." and at the end the installation of the "incrustation" (god knows what this is) version 6.62.01 fails...
It is not all negative, screen intensity hotkeys are working, volume I can change by clicking on the icon in the taskbar. I do not receive any pop-ups about problems.
This morning I installed SP 1 - in all this 9 year old laptop is reborn with WIN 7 and the Samsung SSD.
A couple of weeks ago the X40 became close to being written off when the display backlight tube failed, replaced the CCFL tube and decided to install Windows 7.
Just those small little problems...

Without the graphic drivers you won't be able to stand by or hibernate :(

Sleep mode does not seem to work, instead the computer goes into hybernate...
At least I believe it goes into hybernate, when "restarting" windows it shows on the screen "resuming" windows and it does not take long to have windows running again...

That's something at least! :D

Do you have a friend or somebody that can help you following the instructions posted above? I guess without the proper drivers you will also have a hard time watching any video or animation.

Watching video using WMP and VLC works, sometimes not smooth and more pixalated then I would like to see. Watching stuff on YouTube seems working without a problem...

This thing is driving me nuts...trying to "modify" the driver file from the standard VGA adaptor. For that I have to change ownership from the file in order to modify it. Ownership change is succesfull and I am able to modify the file but its alway been "undone" after a reboot! Following this procedure...http://paulgibbs.wordpress.com/2009/11/ ... o-chipset/

Right, another update. Somehow I did manage to do some euh...damage?
Got the driver installed but now have 2X Graphics controllers/2X general PNP displays and 1X IBM Thinkpad TFT...
Tried removing one graphics controller and one PNP display in the device manager but after reboot they get simply reinstalled by Windows... :?

The X40 is booting normal, no fail msg and video now goes smooth and is no longer pixalated.
I guess thats all what matters no?

Now trying to sort out the hotkeys and the OSD...

Your Device Mgr is fine.
It contains info for both internal and external screens, hence the double entries.
Dutch is absolutely unsuited for computer descriptions (wat een klotentaal!).

PS: please replace your pictures with just links, WAY too many and WAY too big.

Can you explain pls? Is that another bug on the X40 with windows 7 on it?

Sorted the hotkeys and OSD problem...simply deleted the lenovo program file and reinstalled it all - it works fine now! Happy days... 8)

The last item is that I does not goes into sleep/stby mode but directly into hybernate...will see if I can find a solution for that!

I mean you can watch a video in youtube and set the quality to 720pHD, then you'll see of the video is running smoothly or not. It's not a bug, just to see if the drivers can cope with HD material.

Edit: try this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... oN4t5NKW-k, lot's of Thinkpads inside

Just tried to watch the video...its not running smooth, the old X40 cannot cope with HD stuff.
Full screen the video just goes in steps...on lower video quality's are running fine tough...
I would ask myself the question if the X40 would cope with HD movies under XP?
Maybe if I upgraded the ram, currently have 1gig of ram in it.

I am just surprised to see how well windows 7 runs on a almost 10year old laptop.
I used this laptop in the past to readout and reset faults on my car's via the OBD. The old X40's docking station is still equipped with a connection newer generation laptops don't have anymore...and lets face it, it is a sexy little thing.

It's hard to improve HD playback on the X40, simply because the processor simply isn't fast enough. At the very least, 1.6GHz is needed, but 1.8GHz+ is better.

GPU video decoding is out of the question because the 865G doesn't have it.
