Installing a wireless adapter

#1 Post by chzuck » Mon Dec 10, 2012 10:54 pm

I am having one awful time installing a Linksys WPC54G notebook adapter. It will work, but I cannot have the Wireless Network Monitor running or I get External exception E06D7363 errors about every second. When I exit the monitor and restart the computer, the adapter works and I can get on the Internet. Another error that comes up is a Runtime error saying wpc54cf.exe abnormal program termination.

That is my thread on the same problem. I thought posting on here I would find someone who had exactly the same problem and could be of help with my problem.

What exact laptop, what exact OS?
Did you try a complete uninstall/reinstall of the correct/latest drivers?

T22 Thinkpad with W2000PRO and all the updates. Just recently got it with a bare hard drive and loaded all the drivers from the Lenovo site.

I am running WPC54G NIC with no problems on my T30.

I installed Linksys NIC driver, but did NOT install Linksys Wireless Network panel. I use Windows XP "Wireless Network Connection" panel instead.

That is most likely your problem.

As much as I love W2K, getting anything wireless-related to work properly by today's standards is a *major* pain, and sometimes downright impossible.

robert213,
I am running W2kPRO, not XP. I was told XP would very much slow down the laptop.

I might be mistaken, but I thought that the Linksys WPC54G driver supported Win98SE, Win2K, and WinXP.

At least, this is what CNET says:
http://download.cnet.com/Wireless-G-Not ... 74688.html
Version: 3.30.15.0
File size: 16.31MB
Date added: July 17, 2003
Operating system: Windows 98/2000/XP
I'll check my Linksys documentation when I arrive back at my office, tomorrow.

Im positive I used the same card on both my T22 and T23, never had a moments problem with either. Im sure I did not use the Wireless package, instead letting Windoze configure it.
Have you tried deleting the driver, installing the card and then letting the system "find" the correct driver?

I guess I did. I uninstalled the driver, restarted the computer and left it find a driver, but I had the driver in a folder at C:/Linksys and the computer found it. Are you saying remove the driver completely from the laptop and let it find a driver in the W2k software?

To all those who have given suggestions, I thank you. It may be a few days until I can try them because I am working my 12 hour shift rotation and don't have extra time to try things on the laptop. I will report on this forum how I make out. I am considering wiping the hard drive and re-installing the Acronis backup I did right after I installed all the drivers and updates in case something got corrupted since then.

Nope, sounds like you tried my suggestion already.
Basically, get rid of all the fluff, and run with just the driver.

I think I still have a couple of those cards floating around, If you want to try a different one, your welcome to it for shipping. I cant think it will be more than $2 or $3.

Let me know

As I mentioned previously, I bought a NIB, same version card. I could get it to connect, but I could not have the monitor loaded or I would get a continuous error popping up. I am thinking there is a conflict with something on the laptop. I am going to erase and reload my fresh backup and try again.

robert213,
Your setup does not work on W2kPRO.

Here is the latest that works: I installed the driver using the CD that came with my new wpc54g adapter. After installation I got the same External exception E06D7363 error window. I rebooted and got the Runtime error, acknowledged it, but the adapter would not work. After I Exited wireless monitor and restarting the laptop, I was finally connected via the adapter, only without the wireless monitor running. If I disable the wireless connection I cannot enable it unless I restart the computer. I erased the hard drive and reinstalled a backup I did right after loading all the dirvers, updates, and hotfixes before doing the CD install.
