T60 with 1024x768 screen

#1 Post by oeuvre » Sat Dec 15, 2012 10:10 pm

Hey, I have a 14" T60 with 1024x768 resolution... the X1300 64mb ATI GFX, running Windows 7... it's a fantastic machine. I just wonder what are my display upgrade possibilities?

ANd I've never upgraded a display before but I have tinkered around with many laptops before, not just changing RAM and HDs, but fixing fans and replacing logic boards. Thanks for any suggestions.

This is a start.

Another thing- do you have the Hardware Maintenance Manual downloaded?

Yeah I have the manual...

So would it be worth it to upgrade it to a LTN141P4-L02
1400x1050 display?

EDIT: I whipped up this image to show comparison...

That is entirely up to you.

Some people like the capacity for more information to be displayed on the screen. With a higher resolution things should appear sharper and less pixelated as the resolution increases.

If you can find a panel for a reasonable price then I would say give it a shot. See if you like it. There could be variances between the screens as far as which displays a nicer contrast ratio and brightness. I am not sure. Hopfully someone chimes in with a suggestion as this forum is filled to the brim with ThinkPad veterans :)

Personally I cannot stand the pixelated resolution of the XGA screens and I would upgrade to the higher resolution- but then again that is just me.

So this would be good to go? BTW mine has no bluetooth...

From what I've read, I don't have to worry about the connectors, right? Just swap out the screens... do I need to replace the bezel for the display as well?

Hang around for a second opinion before buying but IIRC I would say it would be a straight swap.

If you wanted bluetooth all you would have to do is find a whole lid (would be nice to have the SXGA screen in it as well) with bluetooth and just drop it in your T60 and it would work.

The bluetooth module is inside the bottom of the lid IIRC.

I'll post a wanted ad in the marketplace after a second opinion, thanks.

Yeah I don't care for bluetooth... I used it on my old laptop only once.

I am working on a T60 myself and I need to get rid of that terrible XGA screen! I'll be looking out for a screen as well.

Good luck :)

14.1" XGA can be swapped for SXGA+ by just exchanging LCD-panels.
If you want BT, you will also need a new LCD cable with BT connector and the separate BT module (unless your old cable already has the connector, but not the module).
CAVEAT: you should only buy a screen with an official IBM/Lenovo P/N or FRU (as per your HMM).
Most of the screens sold on eBay claim to be "100% compatible", but they are NOT, you have been warned!
Or you can buy a whole lid (as emeraldgirl08 suggested), which is less work.
Place a WTB (Want to buy) in our market forum instead of going to eBay.

Would be cheaper and easier if you sell this XGA T60 and buy an SXGA+ T60.

Having replaced a dozen or more screens myself, I would now take pianowizard's advice. It's certainly true that it would be easier, and the cheaper part is probably right too.

Mine is in pristine condition plus I don't want to hassle with reinstalling the OS and such.

Just swap in your HDD and it will be like the same machine. If you can find one with an SXGA+ screen in comparable condition to yours, that is.
