The T9300 should fit the T61. The T61 was in fact sold with the T9300. Perhaps there's something amiss with yours?

not sure, i got the t9300 on ebay, tried putting it in and it didn't seem to fit quite the same fit as the t7300. finally i screwed it down, tried to restart the computer and just a couple of green lights came. turned it off and heard a very light whine sound for a second. nothing on the screen.

As ZaZ said, the T9300 definitely fits the T61 - I upgraded my thinkpad from the original T7250 to the T9300.
If yours didn't fit, look underneath the chip for any broken/bent pins. If the pins are fine, the 9300 seems faulty - even assuming your T61 hasn't been flashed with the modded Middleton bios, it should start up after giving a warning message. Search the forum for a link to the modded bios if you don't have it as you need it for the T9300 anyway.

That would depend on how bent it is and what are the chances of successfully straightening it versus breaking it altogether.

If it came that way, return it. If you did it, then you take the loss, if any.

How bent is the pin?

You could email the buyer and see what they've got to say about it. If you don't get any traction there, you can open a dispute with eBay/Paypal. They almost always decide in favor of the buyer. You'll only be on the hook for return shipping, which can't be more than a few bucks for a CPU.

are you all kidding me .. ?!?!?!

just push the pin a bit and that's it. It's copper, moves easily. I have a desktop CPU here that had almost half of the pins bent and I straighten up all without any problems.

Have to agree with miro, lot of fuss over nothing.
Pen barrel, hemostats, or good tweezers to bend the pin and a bank/credit card to align it with the rest of the pins. Once it is close enough, then inserting it into the zif socket and latching it will finish the process.

That does look fixable, but, of course, if you do it and break it you are responsible.

The best way I ever found to fix them, aside from tools designed for it, was with a mechanical pencil (a good one with a metal tip, like a drafting pencil). The tip can slide down over the pin and straighten it as it's pushed down. It was great for getting at a sole bent pin surrounded by straight ones without affecting the others.

If you succeed, and all else is well, you still need to leave a negative for the seller over the following:

Any seller who acknowledges that, is clearly acknowledging that he chooses not to pack his merchandise correctly.

Not trying to stir trouble here. But you bought a CPU from Ebay, did you not think to closely inspect it before installing it? If you did, you would notice that the pin was/is bent. If you tried to install it and bent the pin yourself then that's not the seller's fault. I don't know the whole story so can't say either way. But the fact that you tried to install it sound suspicious to me.
