virtualizing a T30 drive

#1 Post by angelochen960 » Sun Dec 16, 2012 5:26 am

Hi,
My T30 is long gone, left with a drive, got some data in it. I cloned the drive with clonezilla and restored into a VMware virtual machine, during boot, got this XP blue screen:

***STOP: 0x0000007B
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

That should be a driver issue, advice from this article, solution #4 is : boot from a xp cd, go into Recovery Console, disable the 'name?'.txt driver('name?' here refer to the IDE driver for T30's motherboard) and reboot, this will load "standard default IDE driver and should startup", my question is:
what is the name of those IDE drivers in T30? without a working T30, very difficult to find out, could anybody help on this? Thanks,

Angelo

Why don't you just copy the data off the drive that you need, and stop trying to boot the OS in a VM?
BTW, the standard IDE driver is known by the same name no matter what kind of hardware it's installed on.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

I rarely use VM apps, so my next question may be a little uninformed...
Won't you have to be able to boot, at least into safe mode, to change the IDE drivers?
Can you boot into Windows safe mode in a VM? I didn't think you would need device drivers in a VM, because the environment is totally different from the original machine.
It can be very difficult to get XP to boot on different hardware (virtual or real) than it was originally installed on.
Maybe you can do a web search for how to restore an XP image in a VM.
Here is one such guide: http://www.ehow.com/how_7148850_restore ... mware.html

Why not re-install those programs on your current machine?

It will be easier if I still have access to a Thinkpad, I can just set the IDE drivers to standard, then restore a image in a VM, and this will work.

It does not boot either under safe mode with t30's disk driver installed. of course reinstalling is an option, but it will take longer time and difficult to have the same setup as before.
