Random control freeze

#1 Post by beskus » Sun Dec 16, 2012 9:18 am

Hello,

I am having an issue when I use my Thinkpad. After several of minutes all existing control like keyboard, buttons, and trackpad stops. I cannot turn the system off anymore by holding the power button. Every time when this occurs I am forced to battery-pull my laptop. Windows, however, still runs fine. Also, when I attach an USB device this still functions.

I attempted to solve this problem by formatting the entire disk and reinstall windows but to no avail. Is anyone familiar with this problem and able to solve it?

Thanks in advance.

One way to rule out software would be to run a live Linux distro. If the freezing does not occur there then it sounds like a windows issue.

Linux Mint

If the freezing occurs while on Linux also then your problem points towards a hardware issue.

I dualbooted my laptop with backtrack and and let it rest for two hours, and no freeze occured yet. If linux solves the problem, will all or most of lenovo's drivers be available?

Can we get some background on your operating conditions here? What type of ThinkPad are you working with? What is its model type? Which version of Windows were you trying to run?

The model type is found underneath the ThinkPad near the bar code sticker. It has seven alphanumeric digits in this format: XXXX-xxx.

Please post those 7-digits here. The next time you have any type of problem please remember to include as much information as you can so that there is more information to work with. Thanks :)

Edit:

Is it the R52? If it is I see four digits. Can we get the other 3?

Its an R52-1846-AQG. And yesterday I replaced the HDD with another one with Arch Linux on it, and it worked fine aswell. But I am still not shure if linux is as reliable I think. This problem can occur very soon, or after hours. At any time.

Edit: modified my signature aswell to provide more information.
