Help me diagnose this t61

#1 Post by swardrn » Mon Dec 17, 2012 5:31 pm

Ok my Moms thinkpad t61 is dead it will not post (no beeps) and when you power on it immediately shuts down. Heres what I have tried:

1. Removed both memory modules and reinstalled them and then tried a known good memory module from another computer still nothing.

2. Removed dvd rom drive nada

3. Removed wifi card and modem internally nada

4. Tried new ac adapter nothing

5. removed battery and with adapter plugged in nothing

6. removed cmos battery and did a total reset nothing

Im thinking dead motherboard Is there anything else you guys can think of that I can try?
Thanks

So what happened to cause this? Water damage perhaps? Or did it just start doing this?

Do you know the last three digits after those 4? That way I can tell if it has a nvidia gpu.

It looks like that's a Nvidia t61, so my money's on the GPU failing which has been a consistent problem with thinkpads made before 08/08.

So your initial guess is right, mobo's dead. You could either sell it for parts, or replace the mobo.

FWIW it has an Intel gpu:
Based on 7661-12U: T7300(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1440x900 LCD, Intel X3100, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11agn wireless(n-disabled), Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 7c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro

I seem to rememeber all 7661 having an Intel gpu.

Following miro_gt, I'd suggest remove/reseat CPU.
While you're at it, clean out the dust bunnies from the fan.
See if it now boots.
If yes, clean off and replace the thermal paste between CPU and fan.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
