Always on fan problem

#1 Post by ThinkGreen » Tue Dec 18, 2012 3:51 am

In the last days I'm experiencing this strange problem on my Lenovo X220.

When I boot or resume the system (32 bit win 7) the fan immediately start at maximum speed and never stops until I shut down or hibernate the system.

I don't know the source of the problem but it seems to be independent from the system load.

I focus on the fact that I've not recently upgraded the BIOS.

Is this only on battery or AC or both?

If you go into the BIOS there will be a setting about thermal profiles or something like that for when the machine is on AC or battery. I'm not exactly sure where they fall in terms of priority relative to Levono's power management, but you could try playing around with those.

The problem has occured "only" three times and all of them during an AC session (With battery not inserted).

Are you running a Factory Win 7 or a clean install?

Had a similar, but not identical, problem with an x201 recently after doing a clean install.
Normally I do the Lenovo updates I want and follow with the Windows Updates.
For some reason this time I swapped the order and found high temps with the fan running full time.
On a hunch, went back to my usual install sequence and all was fine.

Actually I've the factory win 7 installation (32 bit) but I'm planning a win 8 clean install (64 bit).
