Bout to pull the trigger on FIRST COMPUTER PURCHASE

#1 Post by xcountryrower » Sun May 01, 2005 11:17 am

I'm about to pull the trigger on a T43p (2668-G7U). Has anyone else purchased or used this laptop at all? This thing will pretty much be my child for the next four years while in college, so thats why I'm paying so much for it. I can't wait. This is the first computer that I have ever purchased as a whole and I'm starting to get twitchy. DUDE, I'M GETTIN' AN IBM.

I still think it's major overkill for your needs, but at the same time I am curious to read your review of the T43p once you get the unit. Have fun! :)

Thanks. I realize that it is overkill, but this is the first computer purchase I will have and I want to have a good machine that will last a long time. And since everytime I ask for recommendations for good laptop everyone says "IBM," I think that getting the best that IBM has to offer will last me a lot longer than a POS from Dell, HP, or some other company. As soon as I get it I'll post the review though.

I agree it's absolute overkill but, as my dad says, it's your money to piss away however you want...

Also take note that there may be a delay in shipping of T43p, in case you are in a hurry to get it. If there's no urgency, no problem.

What if I said that I could get a 20% discount bringing the price down to 3g's. What would you say to it then?

I'd say, is that the only model ThinkPad you can get that discount on? I got an equally sweet discount on a somewhat more modest but very well equipped ThinkPad and I paid under $1400 for it. So unless money grows on trees for you, I'd be looking first at what you want and need to do with that computer for the length of time I'd be owning it, and then what computer to buy so I could do those things for as long as I had it. That's how ALL computer purchases should go.

I love your exuberance, though!

I noticed that you are entering college soon. Don't spend so much money on a laptop. It will go obselete faster than you think, and laptops are the number two target for theft in college (bicycles top the list).

Your 3 grand can buy you a very fine T42 now, and another very good T43 (or whatever comes after that) two years down the road. Don't waste your money on cutting-edge technology when you don't need it. Always go for second-generation, after they have ironed out the bugs and refined the technology involved.

By the way, I am an engineer, so you're is my junior :)

Ah, you are in Ithaca. Cornell, I gather? Two of my high school classmates went to Cornell for engineering... very talented people.

intresting about the T43p..
especially since i have several 14 inch versions in stock with one G5U under $3k..

don't you guys ever take a look at thinkpads.com, your host here..??

but don't rush to make a deal with me.. :)

wait a few weeks and deal with the new lenovo-ibm..

it will give me a reason to open one and play with it..

Yeah, I'm from that college in the middle of nowhere. Cornell is notorious for giving students lots of work, too. I speak from painful experience. Hahaha...

The thread-starter should actually wait until he can get the prices of the TPs selling in his college. It's amazing how low college prices can get. If it's not satisfactory, find an EDU discount on IBM, call them up and bargain for tax waive and free shipping. Of course, don't forget Bill, our host, whose great deals are unmatched.

I already looked at the IBM price from my school, but it still cost more than the discount I can get from Bill.

What the other engineers said is true.

In one year most of the laptops will be 64-bits, running a 64-bit Operating System, and in another year most the laptops will be duel core. These two events will mark the quickest and biggest changes in laptops in the last 10 years.

Be more frugal now, and buy something with a lot more power later.
