R50p and Linux

#1 Post by emeraldgirl08 » Thu Dec 27, 2012 12:59 pm

I might have a buyer for my R50p. I would like to run a live linux distro to show that the R50p does indeed work. I have one or two blank CD's left so I cannot do a trial and error run here. I am not sure also which distro will play well with the ATI Mobility Fire GL T2. Any suggestions for which Linux I could use to showcase that the R50p does indeed work fine?

Any flavour of Mint should do just fine. Older the better...

You are going to need the non-PAE i486 kernel, and several of the latest releases don't use it any longer. IIRC, Xubuntu 12.04 (not the regular edition) was the last Ubuntu to still support non_PAE processors. There is a i486 version of Crunchbang Waldorf, AntiX is another, and of course pure Debian offers a i486 kernel. I'm sure there are others, but not sure about Mint, unless you do as George suggests, and go with a older release.

How about running a trial version of Windows 8 on a USB drive?

Are you selling this machine without a hard drive? Or is the Windows COA sticker missing? If the latter is your problem, I have an extra Windows XP Home (not Professional) COA sticker that I can mail to you for free, if you are interested. The sticker says "IBM", so it would be perfect. It doesn't stick well any more, however, and so you would probably need to glue or tape it onto the R50p.

Burned an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS ISO and it just works for the presentation I need to do. The 1600X1200 resolution was fine. It connected to my router flawlessly. The sample music and video that come with the Live ISO work fine as well. Open Office works. The UXGA and IPS looks very sharp!

I used DBAN on the hard disk drive so it is ready. The XP Professional sticker with key is on the laptop. Now just waiting for the potential buyer to contact me so I can meet him at a coffee shop nearby this afternoon.

Thanks for the replies guys! :thumbs-UP:
