Need a successor for my T500

#1 Post by myT43 » Sat Dec 29, 2012 5:01 pm

My T500's (2082BKU) 3 year warranty expires in 20 days. I would love to know which new ThinkPads you guys are replacing your T500's with.

Thanks!

Hello, International Consumer Electronics Show is coming up January 8th through the 11th. There is a good chance that we'll get a sneak peek at the upcoming 2013 Thinkpads with the Intel Haswell processor and maybe an indication of when you can expect them to ship. If your T500 is still holding up OK you may wish to wait a bit and jump to the T540 or whatever the next generation machine will be...

Thanks for your reply and great suggestion as my T500 is running just fine.

Do the new machines only come with a one-year warranty? Mine was three which saved me a couple of times.

Some pre-configured topseller models have three year warranties, but most new ThinkPads have a one year warranty. If you're T500 is doing well, you might want to just extend the warranty for a couple more years. That'll cost less than a new machine. You may extend the warranty any time the machine is still under warranty, though you can only do it once.

Thanks and WOW! I just checked and see I can extend the warranty for another 3 years for $79 - $139. I think I'm going to do it as I'm not a fan of Windows 8, my T500's running fine and has all the features I would want in a new machine.

You are probably looking at the wrong part number/warranty. A T500 that had an original 3 year warranty can be upgraded to a 5 year warranty (two more years). 5 years is the longest warranty duration available.

Note: The 2 extra years of warranty (still ending 5 years from the original purchase date of the T500) can even be added after the initial 3 year term ends, but the cost would be roughly double.

Hmmm, the only choices are as follows:

3YR Onsite Next Business Day $79.00
3YR Onsite Next Business Day + Keep Your Drive $89.00
3YR Onsite Next Business Day + Priority Technical Support $139.00

Are you saying these are upgrades during my current 3 years period of roughly 16 days remaining?

So the only warranty upgrade offered is "on-site" -- warranty will still expire at end of current three years -- no additional two years available? :( bummer

Yea. I have it admit it sounded too good to be true otherwise.

Glad I asked before purchasing.

The warranty upgrade part number for 2082-BKU from a three year depot warranty, which is what your T500 should have, to a five year depot warranty is 45K6025. If you want to go with on-site warranty, the part number is 45K6024. Call sales and see what the prices are.

Yes, that is the machine I have although I'm not sure how you know.

Where did you get the part numbers for extending the warranty? I don't need on-site.

Thanks!

Still a lot cheaper than a new laptop, and OP gets to keep his 16:10 WSXGA+ LCD... :thumbs-UP:

All jokes aside, T500 still packs more than enough horsepower for most users...

Is my 16:10 WSXGA+ LCD a good thing?

I've been very pleased with my T500 and have no need for anything bigger or faster.

Yes, it is. All the new Thinkpads are 16:9, so you're 16:10 LCD has more vertical height - you can see more on the screen without scrolling. Many folks who write software, work with large spreadsheets, etc prefer the 16:10 (or 4:3) format over the more "squat" 16:9 format.

I second using provantage for the extension of the warranty; when my 3 year depot was about over on my T43 I bought an additional two years for about $90, for better or worse it paid for itself many times over (and since it expired the T43 has been behaving.)

I now have Fedora on it and it makes a very nice business machine, not to mention watching movies in bed with the IPS screen.
