Lenovo's reorganization and the future of the ThinkPad line

#1 Post by Ravin' Ray » Mon Jan 07, 2013 8:18 am

A few days ago, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing reported that Lenovo will reorganize into two divisions, one of which will focus on the ThinkPad brand as well as its corporate and enterprise markets. Some are saying this will be a good move for the ThinkPad line because it will be allowed to develop on its own independently and more distinctly from the IdeaPad line.

Let's hope things will improve. Have not been impressed with the new ThinkPad offerings.

I'm a bit suspicious of anything that starts operation on APRIL 1st!

As previously stated why would both sections carry the business name?

Lenovo has been on a slippery slope for far too long, lets hope this is enough to get them back on track.

Like Kilowatt, I am also suspicious of April Fool stuff. However, this is a similar tack that was taken by IBM in the early 1980s when they split into DP and GB groups.
Both groups operated under the same name of IBM, so nothing new there then.

There are usually tax advantages to these splits ... which are often followed by a sell-off of part of one division and the remerging of everything else ... until the next split.

I combined the posts from the duplicate thread in the General Hardware/Software forum and removed a couple of the posts which acknowledged the duplication.

So will the Edge series be in the Think Group or the Junk Group?

The Edge should (and most likely will) be in the Junk group, since it's not a Thinkpad.

Edge series maybe should be in the Lenovo Business Group, but I think it will be in the Think group, since it carries the ThinkPad logo.

That ought to be the same with the new T431s travesty.

After the T431s ThinkPad classic travesty I expect that the Business group will have Edge series while the Consumer one IdeaPads. Classic ThinkPad will be discontinued.

Frankly speaking, the Edge should be in the Junk group along with all these last-generation "thinkpads". But why would they create a Think group and oppose it to a Junk group if the Think group was empty?

I believe the division will be like this:
IdeaPad, Edge, ThinkPad: Think group
Essential/Value line: Junk group.
Lifebook P1032 (1024*600 8.9") => Averatec AV1000 (WXGA 10.6") => Kohjinsha SH6 (1024*600 7.2") => Sharp M4000 (WXGA 13.3") => X200-AFFS, dead => X200s-AFFS, later -PVA => X220 4290RV5 + Intel 310 80GB, T420s 4173KSU + FHD IPS + Sandisk Z400s 128GB

IdeaPad, Edge, ThinkPad: Think group

Only ThinkPads will be in the Think-Group. Lenovo will likely kill the IdeaPad name (that was written by Digitimes), and the IdeaPads will simply named "Lenovo Notebooks", so in Essential/Value line and IdeaPads will be in the "Lenovo Group". But you are right, Edge will be in the Think-Group.

It's a shame, I was always a fan of the thinkpads to be honest.
