What IBM programs can be deleted from Add/Remove programs

#1 Post by Sanr » Mon Jan 07, 2013 10:15 am

Hello,

I have been having a problem with a full hard drive and have been deleting everything I can to free up disk space. It was 51 GB originally, and now have only been able to free up to 9 GB. My computer is running very slow, and will not open many websites at all.

I have 13 IBM programs in the Add/Remove list that are taking up a lot of space and wonder if any of them could be deleted. Also many Microsoft updates and additions that I wonder are valid anymore.

What else could be using up to 40 GB of space? Is it all system and other smilar settings?

I have no games, videos, movies, music, etc. stored on my computer. Only text. I bought a Seagate external HD and moved all files and folders there. I still only have 9 GB of space left. I have all the memory I can fit in it.I am confused about difference in memory and disk space so I don't know really what is the problem to solve.

I would appreciate any suggestions or advice,

Thank you,
Sanr

Check this out: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=55586
Also, go into c:\Windows where you can delete all folders starting with: $NtUninstall....
as well as all the matching log files: KBxxxxx.log
Next, go into c:\Documents and Settings\[userid]\Local Settings\Temp where you can delete everything that is deletable.
(but keep the Temp directory!)
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Download, install, and run WinDirStat :

It will show you where all of your disk space is being consumed.

I don't know exactly which IBM programs you have installed in your system but most likely they are not taking up too much room on your hard drive. The typical ones are Power Manager, Access Connections, and Access Thinkpad. You can see how much disk space each one is consuming in the Add/Remove Program listing. What may be more effective is to purge your older System Restore points and browser cache. See this recent thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 72#p697572

Then there's that hidden Rescue & Recovery directory - RR-something. Not only is it hidden and systemized, you normally can't delete it, but if you boot the computer in safe mode, you can kill it off. I've never liked the system restore point nonsense, it never worked when i needed it, so i routinely back up (copy and / or clone the system hDD and user files) .

If you want to see where the space is being taken up, right click off the root directory, annd the main directories and select properties. UN-hide hidden & system files first, because the space hog mentioned above is hidden.

There is a commercial utility program called Tune Up utilities that can clear this directory, the cache, The RBS-mentioned backups of windoze updates ($NTuninstall*), log files, etc. It can also de-frag the registry and clean it up. Nice inexpensive set of utils.

I don't own stock in the company.
