I bought an X40 without an HD. Swapped in the HD from my current X40, and the used one I bought works great, so rather than use it for parts, I'd like to revive it to use as a travel "netbook" and run WinXP & Office 2003/7.
Anyone recommend a SSD that I can install with an adapter to fit the 1.8" size? I found:
a) RunCore 32GB Pro IV 1.8" PATA IDE Solid State Drive SSD. Model: RCP-IV-P1832-MC
b) Kingspec for IBM (KSD-PA18.1-064MJ) 64 GB IDE Solid State Drive (SSD)
Or could I run XP or Ubuntu from a large SD card?
Happy New Year!

Re: X40 SSD recommendation?
I have personally used a Super Talent 1.8 inch 32GB DuraDrive ZT2 ZIF Solid State Drive(MLC) in a X41 tablet and can recommend it.
It requires a 44-pin-IDE-to-ZIF adapter designed for 3.3V power. The cheap adapters found on eBay like this one are designed for 5V power, so they must be modded. This adapter does not need any modifications.
With such an adapter you could use any 1.8 inch ZIF SSD / hard drives.
Kingspec SSDs seem to have a very bad reputation. Avoid it if possible. Runcore is a more reputable brand. See here for a roundup of 1.8 inch ZIF SSDs: http://forum.notebookreview.com/solid-s ... ost6861746
The SD card reader on X40 is not bootable, so you can't run operating systems off it.
