Problems re-installing Windows 7 on a W700ds

#1 Post by Geophyte1 » Sun Jan 13, 2013 6:00 pm

Has anyone had Computrace keep them from reinstalling an operating system? The reading I've seen says Computrace is supposed to reinstall the service after I get the installation going. I ask this first because the only difference I can see is the message that popup when the bios opens up that lets you know Computrace is in place and gives a phone number for more information - only weekdays.

With reformatted HDs - I run a RAID1 on my W700ds - I use the Lenovo Windows 7 recovery discs and the discs load and everything seems good until we reboot and at the end of the services loading an error screen pops up that says "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart installation. I hit "OK" and the computer reboots and gets to the end of loading services and the same error screen pops up again.

Some history - This past Wednesday just after boot-up a popup stated that I was not running genuine Windows. This was first time I'd seen this. Also I checked on "My Computer" properties and everything looked correct. I also noticed that I could not run Windows Update. I searched forums and read of similar problems with some solutions but none of them were exactly what I needed. I ran all of the hardware diagnostics in ThinkVantage and everything came back OK. I tried to use the Lenovo Discs to recover the operating system but the process stopped at the same place as when rebuilding with the reformatted HDs. I do think the message was a little different. I think it mentioned it could not install on the hardware rather than just saying it could not be completed.
After looking for two days and trying a few things I decided to do a fresh install. I SDDd the HDs on the W700ds and reformated them on my T400 using the Drive Bay Adapter but when I tried to use the Lenovo discs to rebuild the system I got the results already mentioned.
I’ve tried both with a RAID1 and with no RAID.

If it is not Computrace - has anyone had a similar problem and what was the solution?
Thanks.

Just a small correction I said the pop up happened at the end of loading services but
i just tried it again wih the RAID1 and it popped up at the end of system settings.

FYI
The problem was that the 750 gig HDs had 4k sectors and the W700ds installation disks did not have Windows 7 with SP1. I rebuilt it on the old smaller drives and migrated to the larger drives.

Thanks for posting back what the solution was! I wouldn't have guessed AF drives as the culprit.
