xfree86 4.3 on A30p and external monitor

#1 Post by khamsin » Mon May 02, 2005 11:45 am

Dear All,

I hope someone can give me hints on how to do this.

I mean, I have it running, but the refresh rate is terrible. The primary display on my A30p is a UXGA flat panel @ 60 Hz vertical refresh rate. The external monitor I'm using can to 1600x1200 @ 88 Hz vertical refresh. It is an IIyama Visionmaster Pro 502 (A102GT)

My problem is that no matter what I try it always goes to a vertical sync of 60 Hz on the external display. This is not a problem for LCD's as they are continous output i.e. no flicker anyway.

What I would like is with external monitor attached to run at 1600x1200@85+ Hz.

I'm stumped the external display is always running on the iternal display's clock.

Any help or hints would be appreciated.

Update

I'm running a debian linux with the unstable distribution I first installed it 3 years ago and have not had any trouble. It is only recently that I'm trying to get this monitor to work properly (i.e. high refresh rates.)

please Assist

Regards Khamsin

Hi, Khamsin,

try the following: In /etc/X11/XF86Config, ...

1.) Add a 'Monitor' section suitable for the external display. Be sure to include HorizSync, VertRefresh and suitable modelines. This assumes that you have a 'Monitor' section for the internal LCD already.
2.) Add a 'Screen' section which ties this monitor to your graphics device. Once more, this is in addition to the 'Screen' section which binds your LCD monitor to your graphics device.
3.) Add a 'ServerLayout' section which uses the 'Screen' section.

If you're willing to venture into the realms of Xinerama, you can create a 'SeverLayout' section which combines the 'internal' and the 'external' Screens into an amazing 3200x1200 (or 1600x2400) picture.

4.) In any case, start X with a command line which includes '-layout <twomon>' where <twomon> is the name of your new 'ServerLayout' section.

cheers,
-- fish

DoppelFish,

I have tried what you said and setup a dualscreen and it both layouts work. However, I still get low refresh rates on the external monitor

So this is a no go :(

Thanks any way for the tip.

Any other takers?

Just for the record: while doppelfish and dual screen are in order, I didn't mean to doppelpost. Sorry.

I wouldn't mind if one of the moderators killed of one of the posts (and this one, once we're at it) ...
