R52 shuts down with a battery installed

My girlfriend has an R52 I gave her that will run fine when there is no battery installed, but if you put one in it will eventually turn off suddenly. I know this happens when it's plugged in, but I haven't tested the battery by itself yet. This is with a 9-cell battery that works perfectly fine in my T42. What would cause this to happen?
