X220 operation

I've owned my X220 for about 6 months. Why is it that lately whenever it's plugged into an outlet the bottom soon begins to get extremely hot?

yep, i found this to be a problem with the recent X220 after a windows update. Check whether your laptop runs hot in Safe mode.
