Hello all,
So I am running Windows XP on my T40 at the moment. I can have almost no complaints, but as everyone knows XP does not contain real MS-DOS. Why the need for DOS? CM9798...
I have a 250gb HD. I am thinking of partitioning in two. One for 150gb and the other 70gb.
So basically I will install Windows XP onto the larger partition and 98 onto the smaller partition.
Before I start and go through hours of potential problems, is there anyone who has done the same? If so I would appreciate some advice and tips as to any potential problems etc...
Many thanks,
SCJACA

Re: Windows 98 & XP on T40
Full DOS needs to run on FAT-type partitions, either FAT16 (partition limit 2GB) or FAT32.
In FAT32 the limit differs, depending on your version of MS-DOS, PC-DOS, DR-DOS or ??? DOS.
Read up on the max. size before you begin.
If you run the W98/W98SE built-in DOS, you are a bit more flexible, but it isn't pure DOS.
I have an old Cobol compiler, which runs only under DOS.
I had to create a FAT16 partition of 2GB, any larger and the compiler could not write anything.

Re: Windows 98 & XP on T40
I would say use DosBox / a Win98 virtual machine under XP and forget about installing 98 on the real hard drive.
There are a lot of potential issues you can run into installing Win98 on a computer with a more modern OS. For example, it must be installed on a primary partition, its partition must be close to the beginning of the hard disk, you may accidentally overwrite an existing partition because drive letters are different under DOS, you WILL definitely overwrite XP's boot-loader and will have to repair it, etc.
