T23 doesn't start any more

#1 Post by Spezi » Mon May 02, 2005 4:14 pm

Hello,

my T23 does't start any more since this evening.
I hibernated it completely normally and as I it wanted to wake it up, 30 minutes later at a different place, the problem started.
I switch it on, the power LED lights, the fan starts, goes faster and slower and faster and slower an so on.
The display does not start, the hard disk does not start. Nothing ... only the fan: faster, slower, faster, slower.
This is independent of various Akkus, memory, the small yellow (BIOS?)Battery, harddisk and CD-Rom, because that are the parts, which I had already removed and/or had exchanged. Also at the external monitor there are no changes in this condition.
Did someone have a similar problem already? What could it be?
I need my notebook for use.

Thanks a lot and greetings
Daniel

Daniel,

Did you solve your problem? Is it possible that your Graphics Card got busted? This would explain why the fan seems to be working but you can't see anything in the T23 LCD or on any external monitor. You could try and hook up your T23 to a docking station with a Graphics Card hooked up once more to an external monitor. The problem is that I don't know if that would work without loading any drivers (anybody know?)
On second thought, you mention that your HD doesn't start, so maybe all this will be of no use.

I am sorry, but I can't give you any more advice. However I can empathize with you  . My T23 only works off battery power as of this morning, so I am left with about 1:30 of use from it, in which time I will frantically try to backup everything.

Good luck with your T23!

Hi :)
Batuta wrote:Spezi, did you run the BIOS self test and if yes, what did it say?
I'm not able to run anything, because exept of the fan nothing seems to work anymore. The HD and display don't start and even with an external monitor I'm not able to see something.

If the graphics card got bustet, the only way would be to change the systemboard. :( It will cost some Money.

I think the problem depends on the systemboard, because if I change the other components, the problem is the same.
I plugged the HD to my desktop PC with some adapter and were able to save my data. Now I'm waiting for some cheap systemboard or defect T23 with working board.

Bye Daniel

EDIT: Bought some T23 without HD, RAM and DVD-Rom with 12 Month Warrenty for 266€. I can use my old HD, RAM and DVD and sell the Rest. Could be a cheap Result.

Bye Daniel

Try this:

Remove battery and AC power.
Hit the power switch 10 times in a row, then on the 11th time hold down for 30 seconds.
Put in battery and attach AC.

Sometimes works on laptops that won't power on at all.

If the Fan only comes on, you may need a mother board replacement.

You might try reseating all your memory and removing every device you can and put them back one at a time (modem card, DVD, HD, etc).

I've seen this happen for 3 reasons in my travels. Be very careful with #1 and don't even try #3 unless you are sure of your settings:

1) Dirt buildup on the heat sink..... [Try some compressed air and see what you can get to without doing too much surgery. Make sure it is compressed AIR and not the propellent stuff they are selling now. That stuff is highly flammable and you will have to wait quite a while after using it to allow it to dissipate from the electronics (or you will have more to worry about!).]

2) There is a issue between the BIOS and the OS Kernel..... [If you have a floppy and an old Emergency Boot Disk try to see if you can boot into a different OS like DOS or Win98 or ???. If you can change the boot preference you can also try to see if a Rescue CD might work.]

3) ***MOST LIKELY*** You may have a capacitor going bad on the power/discharge end of the mainboard that might not be completely dead so there's a possibility you could get a bit more out of it. In a desktop you can see it bulging slightly but don't do surgery on a laptop! If this is the cause my solution MIGHT work, but if it does it will take longer and longer to get it to boot each time until it's finally dead. It will also cause you to have to reset any non-default settings in the BIOS that might be important to your setup so don't even try this unless you know what you are doing.... [Remove the BIOS battery, the main battery, the A/C, and anything not essential (optical, extra RAM, wireless, modem, anything attached to a port, etc.) and let the system sit overnight before even trying to start it up. Put in a BIOS battery (new one if possible, or if the BIOS battery is weak), then either the main battery or the A/C and immediately try to boot with the non-essentials out. This gives a weak capacitor a chance to recover and then at startup puts less stress on your power system due to the lack of non-essential devices. If it starts, keep the system cool any way you safely can and use your time wisely to get your important data transferred or fix the work you lost during the botched hibernation.]

kchung's suggestion is one I've heard of too but never tried.

Good Luck!

Yak
