Just ordered my first notebook-- T43, AAAHHH!!!

#1 Post by BoostedA4 » Mon May 02, 2005 4:38 pm

Hah, just got off the phone with IBM/Lenovo after ordering my first notebook, T-43.

Here are the specs:
-1.86 PM Sonoma
-512 MB DDR2 PC4200 RAM (1 DIMM)
-40 GB 5400rpm (the only downside, but I had to compromise somewhere)
-15" SXGA+
-CD-RW
-64 MB X300
-3 year warranty

$1,515 shipped and after taxes

I think I got one hell of a deal! I can't wait for this to arrive!!!! Sorry, I'm just really excited.

Now on to searching about first things to do once I get my laptop....

Yeah, the EPP discount is great, I got my T42 through it with what I thought was a great a 10% discount at the time. I was surprised and kind of upset after seeing just how huge the discounts have recently become; most of the systems hover around 25% of discount now.

today I got 2379-DXU 1481.49 before tax....
it is a good deal...

although it is a T42
but it comes with SXGA+ LCD, 7k60 HDD, BT and figerprint reader.
i think i dont have to pay 200~300 USD more for similar T43 even without 7K60 HDD.... that the reason why i buy a T42, not T43

the only thing need to do is to order an IBM a/b/g mini pci II wireless card for about 50 USD.

I'm already having buyer's remorse.....feeling I should've gone for the cheaper T42 with better battery life and less heat...

Help convince me otherwise, lol

Would be tough to convince you either way.
The T43 is a faster CPU, faster memory interface.
Since this is the case, it is a little hotter, the fan runs a little more often, and the battery drain is higher. However the T43 has a larger capacity battery to compensate.

The X300 may be a very small step down in 3D performance from a 9600, but if you don't do 3D it is irrelivent.

The T43 has a PCI-X slot should you ever need a future accessory that uses it.

As always, with any computer hardware purchase, there are tradeoffs, pluses and minuses to every purchase. "Add them up" in your head, and you have your decision.

I have been "debating" the T43 I received vs a T42 I could have had, and have not made any final decision (although I will in the next day or so.)

However, it does seem like you got a very good price, indeed. If I got that pricing I would have been very happy.

dang Andrew...

Man, i thought you over and done with your choice struggle ? :D

Last time i heard, you got a t43 CTO and pretty happy with it? What happen my friend?

I'm in no rush to get my second TP. I'll order when i have time in June. By then, i guess there are change to the 43 or something else.

Anyone knows what is the availability with the T42 now? Is IBM/levono going to discontinue it soon? Because the FVU model was readily available until recently and now i heard stories about waiting time of 2 weeks for that models
Current: T60 2623-D6U, Ideapad S12 (upgraded to XP Pro)
Past: T42

I am not sure what you "ended up with" either.

As for me, chances are that I will keep the T43, but I thought that you knew the "issues", those being the extra heat and the extra fan activity, which frankly are not big deals. Will decide in a day or so. Also am dealing with other notebook needs other than just my own.

Waiting times right now are either a combination of the Lenovo switchover and "Dothan shortages worldwide" or one or the other, who knows?

I have only found one web article supporting the "Dothan shortage" story, saying that Intel is transitioning to Sonoma.

If Intel is transitioning to Sonoma, how is there going to be a time when more Dothan's are available?? That doesn't make a lot of sense.
