(This needs to be in a FAQ.)
"A" (no longer made) and "R" are desktop replacements. "A" had three spindles (HD, CD/DVD and floppy.) "R" has only the first two, but you can add floppy via USB.
"G" are entry-level (read: cheap) models that use a desktop CPU rather than mobile chips. They're larger, heavier and consume more power.
"T" are the workhorses. They're generally a compromise between function, speed and size.
"X" are the smallest and lightest but they also have the smallest screens (12"), smaller keyboards and only one spindle (HD.)
The "p" at the end means "performance", "professional", "perfect" or "pricey." It's the top of the line and has better LCD, graphics, multimedia, etc. than p-off models.

SL500 (2746-CTO) • X61s (7666-34U) • T60p (2007-93U) • A21p (2629-HWU) • eXThinkpad (5160-087)

I thought "p" stood for performance.
Also, the A and R series use cheaper case materials so they have less sturdiness than T and X series which are the workhorses.
The G series is meant to be a desktop replacement for low mobility applications (ie, when corporations want to give everyone laptops but the employees really don't move about that much-- think closer to a slimline desktop.) It's not necessarily because they come in cheaper on the cost scale. It is a larger form factor, heavier weight, low battery-life, but really sloped keyboard for ease of use factors.

If T version have magnesium than it should be ok to drop the laptop from 1m ?
i just bought a R40 and i compare with my cousin's T41 and here are the list
my r40: PM 1.3ghz ,512mb, 40gb, battery approx 6h
her T41: PM 1.6, 256mb, 40gb, battery(?)
they are almost the same or am i missing something here?
