T22 laptop

#1 Post by newtothis » Thu Jan 31, 2013 5:29 pm

Hi
I have just got a T22 laptop in a docking station for my grandson.
A few weeks ago I accidentally broke the screen of his old ibm laptop so I thought this would be a good replacement.
But it doesn't connect to the Internet , I am thinking that I have to buy a card or something???
Also the man I bought it from has just told me via text message that I will need to update the operating system to the one my grandson used to used.
The old laptop had Xp , this new laptop has Windows 2000
I looks like a good laptop and docking station but do you have to have a lot of techie experience to get online with it and to update the operating system?
Any help at all would be much appreciated xxx :)

Are you trying to connect with ethernet cable or wireless? It should have an ethernet card in the machine. If not, ebay will have them. I hope you did not pay too much, as this is a very old machine. If you want to have a decent operating system for your grandson to use, take a look at this:

IBM T20 (2647-86U) - 900MHz/512MB - 2x8GB CF - Atheros AR5413 mini-pci - #! IBM T23 - 16GB CF - #!
IBM T42 (2373-JTU) - 1.7GHz/1GB - HM160HC IBM 560x - 233MHz/96MB IBM 701c
Lenovo T601 (8897/2007) - T9300 - 4GB - 32GB SSD - Xubuntu 14.04

Hi
Thank you for replying.
I am trying to connect wirelessly.
No I didn't pay a lot of money at all , I paid £20:00 for it.
Is working fine and Windows 2000 looks ok.
Thank you :)

Ok. That machine does not come with native wireless. I would try to locate a "pcmcia wireless card" on ebay or another site. This should be able to get you on line wirelessly.

Hi
There seems to be a few different types of PCMCIA cards.
Will they all fit?
Should I be looking for one that runs with windows 2000?
Sorry for all the questions, this is all so new to me.
Thank you :)

They should all fit. You will want windows 2000 support. I would guess that if they support XP they would support 2000, but not 100% sure on that.

If you never want to use a wired connection again, you could replace the ethernet/modem card with something like this:

You still need to verify that win2k drivers are available.

I have done this to mine for wireless.

*Editted to correct the pci-e card that was linked. That is wrong and will not work on this system...

That's a mini PCI-Express card, it won't fit in a T22. You'll need to get a mini PCI (not to be confused with mini PCIe), but even then I'm not sure if the T22 has already the internal antennas installed. Maybe going for a PCMCIA Card would be the best option

There are no T20/T21/T22 models that have built-in antennas.
But you can attach the lid of a wireless-ready T23 onto your T22, and then replace the NIC/Modem card with a wifi card, such as the Intel 2200BG, or go even higher and put in an N-capable wifi card such as the TP-Link TL-WN861N: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/control ... details&Q=
or from other sources such as Fleabay.
However, the T22 is awfully limited with only max. 512MB RAM.
It will never run anything better (properly) than Windows 2000, Windows XP-FLP (if you can find it) or Linux.
Forget about Vista, W7 or W8.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

So I can never increase the memory on the T22?
That's a shame
I have given it to a man down the road, he is going to put xp on it and put a wireless card in for me :)

That's right, but don't look at it as a flaw. The T22 and Windows 2000 were probably designed to run on about 128MB RAM, and in the day, 512MB was considered a LOT of RAM. Maybe even overkill. You just can't expect performance of a 10-12 year old computer to even come close to a modern machine. But, you can still enjoy these old computers for what they now are...collectables.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Sorry to tell you this but you made a mistake. The T22 is okay for a diehard Thinkpad fan looking for a cheap collectible, but is a piece of junk if your grandson wants to actually use it. My advice is, do not spend any more money on it. Either throw it away or use it as a doorstop, and buy something more modern. Why don't you start a new post listing your criteria (i.e. budget, features needed, etc.) and people will help you find a suitable laptop.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP
