x230: buy now at lenovo w/ 12% savings or wait?

#1 Post by iveand » Sat Feb 09, 2013 12:52 pm

I am looking at purchasing an x230 soon and always am frustrated by the lenovo site "deals". The deals are so regular that it makes me feel buying "without a deal is a ripoff". So, now the deal is save 12% on x230 through Feb 13. This means the base price is at $764.72 down from $869. So, is this a "good deal" or will they have a better deal days after this deal expires? Thanks for any insight into Lenovo's crazy price marketing scheme.

That's the way with "deals" - you never know if a better one is around the corner. :)

What are the specs? The lowest I've seen the X230 with no upgrades was little over $600, but I've you've got the IPS and a few other upgrades, that's not a bad price. Getting the absolute lowest price is always tough to do.

Here is what $764 currently gets:

i5-3210m
320 7200 RPM
"standard" screen (no IPS)
4GB 1 DIMM

So, indeed it has been cheaper in the past, notably shortly after launch (I recall this B&N deal everyone was talking about last summer) and black friday. But I haven't been tracking these too long and am at the point of needing one. I guess I get the machine I feel I need and don't fret over a possible $50 - $100 additional "possible savings".

If you don't mind that your warranty will be limited to 1 year depot (with no option to upgrade the warranty), then I would recommend to also look at the Lenovo outlet. Sometimes, good deals can be had there. But you have to act quickly if you see a good deal there; otherwise, it'll be gone.

Interestingly, if I "log in" first to Lenovo then I am seeing the base price being $677, for same specs mentioned above. The only thing different, so it seems, is that if I want the base wwan module it is NOT free anymore (as it was w/o being logged in with base price of $764), but costs $125. I don't really want a wwan module as I am planning on using mSATA. Again, confusion reigns on how the deals are marketed. But will probably go with this option. I will confirm the outlet doesn't have a better option currently.

Further clarification is that I used the "Barnes & Noble" login link at shop.lenovo.com, and that is where I found the additional savings.
