Lenovo T43s?

#1 Post by atlacatl » Tue May 03, 2005 1:02 pm

Silly question: for those of you buying new ThinkPads, do they still come with the IBM ThinkPad logo on the cover?

I was checking the ibm thinkpad site and everywhere where there was and IBM logo, it's gone and all the warranties now read: Lenovo makes no representation or warranty regarding third party products or services [blah, blah].

For some reason, I don't feel like I'm buying an IBM ThinkPad anymore. I know it's purely psychological as they are probably still selling the same machines, but, to me a Lenovo ThinkPad is not the same as an IBM ThinkPad :(

I know it's personal taste but, seriously, IBM Thinkpad or Lenovo's Thinkpad.. They are still the same machine.

I paid extra to get Thinkpad because of the service and quality of the machine, not IBM name.

You get the same support and quality with Lenovo Thinkpad. Same old support/sale teams, same old assembly line (might be changed soon) and with IBM look over the quality, i beleive it will still be the same old quality.

If anyone asks me for notebook recommendation, Thinkpad will still be my first choice.

It occurs to me that there might be a market opportunity here for someone to make nice RGB IBM logo stickers to go on Lenovo TPs.

Of course IBM might object. But if we have them made in China and sell them through a web site located in Uzbekistan...

YES! :)

Lenovo is IBM's sole supplier of PCs, and Lenovo has the right to make IBM branded ThinkPads for at least the next few years. The Red/Green/Blue IBM logo isn't finished quite yet.

it will be interesting to see if IBM takes back over the PC market or keeps it with lenovo after the contract expires.

Heard that the plant production is also being relocated. Not sure if this will gonna effect the quality of the Thinkpads though, considering some parts made in China --keyboard & battery for example-- considered inferior equipments.

Not that I'm ANTI-"made-in-China" products but it is the current fact  , since urrently most parts are from over the world, Thailand, Indonedia, Phillipines, Korea. QC of each plant, instead, is the issue and moving to new manufacturing usually introduces unexpected problems for initial lots. Guess all we can do now is wait and see.

I think they are moving their manufacturing plant to China as well.

I will be hesitant to buy new ThinkPads in the first few months of this move. I.e. There will a lot of kinks to iron out in the new facilities - This is just a fact of manufacturing, and not representative of the country where these machines are made. There are many factors: training, unfamiliarity with IBM/Lenovo Quality Control thresholds, etc, etc.

I was really looking forward to long term IBM ThinkPad ownership and patronage (I really want an X41), but I will wait a bit and keep reading this forum and see how everything works out.

Of course, this is pure speculation that the quality will suffer, but in reality does any type of major transitional manufacturing work ever comes out wrinkle free? Specially a big manufacturing move? Details: http://www.ibm.com/pc/us/pcannouncement.html

I'm guessing there are probably some "IBM" Thinkpads left around in the warehouses, so those are probably the same good (or bad) quality as before. I'm guessing immediate buys are probably still manufactured in the old plants.

BTW, it would be a good idea to horde the real "IBM" ThinkPads and sell them at a premium later on :)

If mine shows up without an IBM logo it will be hard to keep. It will have to be perfect. I ordered mine when it was still IBM, March 7th. I really want to have an IBM branded thinkpad. Supposedly, the branding is not supposed to change right away.

Now if I ordered one today that would be different. Branding has begun to change over the past month and a half, as far as support, sales, etc. There is already a Lenovo branded site that parallels the IBM site. As for the manufactuirng move, that will most likely mean more delays. :( If quality does suffer, IBM will not have a very fun time supporting them. As for returns within the 30 days, my guess would be Lenovo takes the loss. We'll just have to wait and see.

I'm glad I made my order april 21st...basicly a week before the switch over. I think I might call today to find out the status and what's going exactly...I wonder if the delays have anything to do with the switch? yes, they say it's the processors...but, when I asked about upgrading the processer the rep. said they both had waits....so, who knows?

haha, I was just joking about that. I've waited to long to send it back for such a small reason. It's rebuilding a car then driving it off a cliff. sure it be fun to see what happends...but, why would you put all that time into something just to throw it away.
