fan error woes *PIC*

#1 Post by anystupidname » Wed Feb 13, 2013 6:02 am

Sooo, hi.

I've been wrestling with fan error for a while. I ordered another fan from pchub.com and it took forever to arrive from malaysia.
It is obviously used and looks even worse than the one I'm trying to replace. Most importantly, it appears to not work just like the one I'm replacing...

Shouldn't the fan be kicking in at this temperature?!?
Should I just underclock it and leave it that way or is there some other way to do this?
I see fan error posts everywhere but I'm not sure how to proceed.

First of all what "Fan Error" were/are you getting?

The fact you've got another fan could be irrelevant, as the temperature the fan switches on at is controlled by the motherboard circuitry, not the fan itself. If the fan appears to run at full speed when first turning on, then it's likely to be working OK.

When you replaced the fan, you did renew the heatsink compound? If not you MUST, and use something like Arctic Silver 5, and spread over the thinest of thin layers on the CPU. Thick blobs of heatsink compound will prevent heat conduction and could lead to high operating temperatures.

Also blow out of the dust from the fan heatsink fans (with lung power!).

Also never use a laptop on a lap, carpet, rug, duvet etc as they all block the air intake vents and will overheat the laptop (applies to all machines not just Thinkpads!).

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. I'm sort of scatterbrained most of the time. This can be marked resolved. I got another fan replacement it has been working for quite some time since.
