T520 slowed down

#1 Post by pjw901015 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 5:19 pm

About a couple of months ago, the computer slowed down for unknown reason.
The machine is about 10 months old now.

One area that the change is most apparent in is browsing the web with google chrome. Before the performance drop, I was able to open 40+ tabs at a time without an issue, and the tabs will open immediately with no delays. Now, after opening up 5 tabs or so, each additional tab opens with some delay (not long, but noticeable) and when I open 20+ tabs or so, chrome crashes and I either have to refresh each page or start the program all over again.

Also, previously, when I stream high definition videos (NBA league pass, MLB TV, etc) on a TV that the laptop is connected to, I was able to surf the web with no problem. Now, however, while the stream works fine when I don't do anything, picture lags whenever I scroll down a page or surf the web.

Folders with a lot of files also load slower than it did before.

What I have noticed is that it seems like the memory is exhausted more easily than it did before; for example, I get a warning that the memory is very low with only 20 tabs of google chrome which before, I never got the message with 50 tabs or more.

To better give you an idea of what I'm experiencing, the computer now runs like its settings are lowered in Power Manager, when until two months ago, it ran with its settings at maximum performance.

I'm not sure if anybody has experienced a sudden performance drop, but even if you didn't, please tell me what I can do to maximize and/or better the speed. It's growing more frustrating by each day.

Thanks

There is a good chance you have a virus, quite possibly a root kit. The only remedy is to wipe, and do a clean install.

Unfortunately, even if you browse only websites for "legitimate" reasons, many websites harbor infections themselves, via the technique called "sql code injection." Adobe Flash and Reader are also very significant vulnerabilities. And, above all, Java.

I am not that familiar with Chrome, but in IE, there is an easy way to view add-ins and see how long they take to load. I'm sure there is something similar. Probably one of the toolbars or add-ins needs updating or removal
