Some people will definitely be interested in those A31s. An IPS-screened Intel-gfx T43? That's a bit of an odd combo, unless there's something I'm missing(Radeons ran hot, heatsink wasn't good, etc.)

I don't blame you for keeping the X60T and X32, and ESPECIALLY the W700ds... I have a standard W700 with a digitizer, the thing's amazing.

Good luck with selling your collection.

The T43 in question came from me a couple of years ago, one drop-dead-gorgeous-rare-bird.

I believe that these were the original specs:

ThinkPad T43 (1871-Y2N)
Based on 1871-CTO: P M 750(1.86GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HDD, 15in 1400x1050 LCD, Intel 900, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11bg wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

I might have added a BT and/or FPR...can't recall now...

I'm happy to see an old friend post here again...even if just to get rid of his cherished ThinkPads...

Ah... CTO. That makes sense now. But was it supposed to be a cool-running, extended battery life Flexview? I guess I can see the reasoning behind it.

Will the X32 display work on an X31? If so, what are you asking for it?

I'd be staggered if he did. No Thinkpad-enthusiast anywhere, or anyone who likes real laptops will easily part with a W7xx. They're sort of the biggest, baddest Thinkpads ever made in my opinion, and the DS models are just the top of the tree.

If there's anything I'd want Lenovo to make again, it's another W7xx. But I think they're too scared to. :)

I do think that it's possible you got a lemon, or that the W700 is a bad model (don't have any first hand experience). I actually think that many Lenovo Thinkpads were quite nice. T60 were amazing, but then again you can say they were IBM designed. 61/400/500 series are ugly but quite durable (except the hinges maybe). And later models (*10/*20 series) I found very well-designed, and so far without notable issues (have been using the T410 for about 2.5 years now).

The new models, however, seem to fall short. On the one hand, they don't look very innovative - competition went ahead, and Lenovo seemingly didn't (no IPS screens, for instance). On the other hand, they managed to do the one thing that alienated a lot of their oldschool fans - change the keyboard layout.

So, this seems like a turning point for Lenovo. If they succeed, this time will be remembered as the dawn of a new era for Thinkpads. If they fail, it might be remembered as the time when Lenovo finally ruined the brand. :)

Toshiba introduced the 13.3" 2560x1440 Kirabook a couple months ago, and Acer also just announced a 2560x1440 option for the 13.3" Aspire S7. Yep, these are the two laptop manufacturers that historically used the worst LCD panels, i.e. minimum resolutions for Toshiba and cheapest TN panels for Acer. I am afraid the current "worst laptop LCD" title goes to Lenovo. More info here:

Thanks PW. Long time. How you been?

Saw the Kirabook news and a comparative with MBPro where the MBPro came on top.

I'd like to see how this Acer one fares.

If any of them support 16GB RAM then that will be top of my LIST.

Are you referring to this article, Toshiba KIRAbook vs. MacBook Pro with Retina display ? This is a ridiculous "analysis". The reviewer concluded that the Toshiba "doesn't quite do enough to topple the MacBook Pro from its pedestal", but his only reasons are: 1) its battery lasts for 6 versus 7 hours, and 2) its resolution of 2560x1440 is lower than the Apple's 2560x1600. On the other hand, he calls the 2.9lb Toshiba "a little lighter than" the 3.6lb Apple. In fact, since the Apple is non-touchscreen, he should have compared it with the non-touch version of the Toshiba, which weighs only 2.66 lbs, a whopping 0.9 lbs lighter than the Apple. Other reviewers did point out a real problem with the Kirabook, namely most applications don't scale properly within Windows, but I remember we had this discussion before and you insisted that's not a problem at all.

Anyway, when we read these reviews, we need to read them critically instead of blindly trusting their verdicts, especially since many of these reviewers are Apple fanboys.

I agree with all that you said. :) Yes, the scaling is not an issue for me. I'll figure out how to deal with it on Windows :)

PS: But, I'd love to see everyone come out with Retina/ HiRes Displays to level the playing field and hence also KICKSTART innovation & updates of Software that can Scale and Leverage these displays more INTELLIGENTLY.

I'd like some machines to come out (some thinkpad I hope) such that I can say MBPro is weak compared to it :) So far its neck & neck.

And then we can go office space on those [censored] 1366x768 fake HD laptop sceens. Who's the Freak that came up with that to use across all laptop manufacturers. God! as if 1080p did not exist.

I still think you might be surprised, since all your current laptops have much lower pixel densities than "Retina" screens. FHD on 15.6" or SXGA+ on 12.1" is nothing, even when compared with 15.0" QXGA (171 DPI), let alone "Retina" (>>200 DPI).

I think Microsoft would be in the best position to handle this transition, considering that it's now making its own computers (i.e. the Surface and Surface Pro), and of course it makes Windows as well. Before that happens, however, I will continue to limit myself to no more than 170 DPI, and IMO 13.3" 1920x1080 is currently the best balance between mobility and high resolution.

PW - I think more than anything when MS came out with Surface pro it pinched a lot of the OEMs to freaking wake up and innovate.

I was surprised at how many machines from HP, Dell and other vendors still had 1366x768 screens way after the Retina iPad & MBPros were launched.
