IBM ThinkCentre S50 Ultra Small Graphics upgrade

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Fri Feb 15, 2013 9:51 pm

I got in a really mini desktop, IBM ThinkCentre S50 Ultra Small 8086 http://assets.hardwarezone.com/2009/img ... centre.jpg
Its the same size as the XBOX 360 Slim basiclly, and even uses the ThinkPad R50/R60/Z60 models CD drive. It has a Intel Celeron D processor and a Intel Extreme graphics card built in and I think 2GB RAM Max. I was thinking this probably could set out with my game consoles for the PC games. But the one thing is, is it just has 1 PCI slot "White one". Is there a graphics card that goes into theses? My other desktops use the long black style one for its graphics card.

You need to check if the machine automatically switches off the built-in Intel graphics, if you put in a PCI graphics card.
It should have two PCI slots, and before you buy anything, those in the S50 are for only half-length cards!

So ive been thinking of upgrading the board in my S50 Ultra Small and looked at the size of Mini ITX boards. would these fit in the case of my mini? It is 7inch wide and 9inch long and dont know the PSU power. And what is the best for graphics that will last about 10 years since they dont have a graphics card slot. Im still wanting to make this my PC console and was going to try out my Windows 8 on a 1TB HDD.

A miniITX board should fit, but you will probably have to drill new mounting holes.

To be honest, I wouldn't bother. I bet that CPU can be upgraded to a faster Pentium D. Max out the RAM, install a nice WD Blue drive and a half length PCI card and you should be fine.

What's the machine id for that unit?

I have a problem with Stink Bugs and they are getting into the PCs in room. I just removed 8 of them from my ThinkCentre S50 and I powered it on and all the fan spin at full speed until I turn off the system. I unpluged the Fan marked CPU Fan and everything boots up fine after I unplug it and boots to windows. But I shut it down after since it is for the CPU. I pluged it back in and get the high speed fan running again. I dont know whats wrong with it, I cant tell if their is bugs in the PSU or not since I cant open it. But just to warn StinkBugs will get into your PCs and laptops and ruin them.

After dealing with the bad smell, I manged to get the PSU out and found 5 screws and removed them to find more stink bugs inside it, Put everything back together, and closed the lid, powered it on and everything is running smooth now. So they must have been shorting out the PSU. So everyone be advise about stink bugs, this goes to all electronics and even your vehicle witch I found in my vents while cleaning.. Also never saw these bugs until 2 years ago.
