IPS swap - broke Thinklight. Ergh.

#1 Post by Medessec » Fri Feb 22, 2013 1:37 am

I was swapping the 1600x1200 panel from one of the T43ps I got to my 15" T60p, to finish off it's supremity. The other 1400x1050 IPS was dimming, probably due to the bulb going out. It looks amazing, as you can see:

Unfortunately, while I was getting the old screen out, the Thinklight just wouldn't come out of it's little place in the lid, and I tried to get it out, but I ended up shearing it off the video cable:

I really want to preserve the originality of this thing... so I want to see if I can fix it. In case there's no solution to fixing what I have already, I went ahead and bought another 15" T60 video cable.

The dimming 1400x1050 IPS is probably going to be sold on the Marketplace for cheap if I can't get it to play nice with the T43p(anyone have any suggestions?), and this kinda stinks... i'll have to get another screen, or another T43.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

It's only two wires for the thinklight.
You can scratch off the insulation-film (on the 'rougher' side of the cable) and then solder some small wires to connect it again.
BTDT.

Ah alright. I wasn't completely sure if it was bad for the film around the wires or something to solder it, thanks. I'll see if I can get around to doing that later today.

Regarding your T43p, you should be able to use the sxga+ screen as long as you have an sxga+ cable for the laptop. That series uses cables to select the screen resolution where the T6x uses firmware so al cables are the same, so you can use a T60 screen in a T4x, but cannot use a T4x screen in a T60. I've read there are some cases of late model T43 systems shipping with T60 screens, but that's going off-topic

That is the problem I've run into... I don't have a 15" SXGA cable. For now I've swapped the good parts into a 14" chassis with an XGA screen, in case someone here ends up buying that. But when I do get the cable, I might swap it back if I find the time and the will power to do it(swapping boards is a pain).

I'm pretty certain that I have a good 15" SXGA+ cable for T4x series somewhere downstairs if that's what you need...let me know...

Welp... it would mean putting an X300 board into a 15" T43p chassis, and I don't think it'd do it justice. A friend has expressed interest in the 14" shell anyways, he likes the smaller profile.

I will keep that in mind though-thanks for the offer. :)

While looking for something else earlier today, I've located the aforementioned SXGA+ cable.

And if your friend needs a LCD assembly to complete that 14" build, I've got a near mint one, basic but inexpensive.

If you end up needing any of this stuff, just drop me a line.

You can re-arrange the LCD cable to whatever resolution you like by soldering/unsoldering shunts near the connector.

Dawh... doesn't sound like something I'd want to do to an all original, perfect 15" UXGA screen cable. :?

You can reverse the change anytime without any "side effects".

The shunts (SMD =Ohm resistors) are soldered in factory, you just rearrange them not hacking a cable by cutting etc.
