Is there any way to increase the tension so the screen stays in place?

I believe that the only way to do this is to replace the hinges. (Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone)

$14.49 for a new hinge (plus ca. $20.- for shipping an X61T both ways) beats a new laptop any time!

You are correct in doing the math, but there is something to be said for "moving up the ladder" to a better unit, rather than money into an older unit. Again, thanks for the generous offer.
