T61 memory upgrade?

#1 Post by Olwe » Tue Feb 26, 2013 12:22 pm

I'd like to add memory to my T61. It's got 2x2gb now. I'd like to go up to 6gb (2gb + 4gb). I've heard the wives tales about "mixing" memory sizes. Will T61 behave with "mixed" mem sizes?

Here's the memory combo that I've done in my T61(s). Each configuration works fine.

2x1GB, 1x2GB, 2x2GB, 1x1GB + 1x4GB (5 GB), 1x2GB + 1x4GB (6 GB), and currently 2x4GB. For my usage I can easily do with 2 GB but 8 is there if ever I get inspired and my desktops are not available.

You will also need a 64-bit OS to be able to use more than 4GB.

3.25GB actually. The full amount of ram is reported however.

Currently I have 2GB + 4GB in my T61. It runs perfectly fine, and in fact CPU-Z reports that the memory is running in "dual" channel mode.

I've been an ebay shopper for memory. Does anybody know a better source?

You want to use branded memory such as Crucial or Kingston IMO not some generic memory from eBay. The price may seem favorable but I wouldn't trust it and there is probably no warranty.

Personally, I only have bought/will buy brand name memory from any of these retail outlets:
amazon.com
newegg.com
crucial.com
fry's
Best Buy

I've always bought used memory from eBay, but I only consider those listings of brand-name memory with actual photos and detailed descriptions of part numbers, etc. Haven't run into defective memory so far.
