T23 Windows 7 problems

#1 Post by alfonzoz » Fri Mar 08, 2013 10:51 am

I think this is the right place to ask these questions... If not, my apologies...

I have an old, T23 -26479LU with a gig of memory that I've now had for close to 10 years and it was 5 - 10 years old when I bought it on e-Bay. Anyway, it worked great on XP and I used it a lot. But, foolishly, I upgraded to Window's 7  . I have 3 questions:

1) I have a standard VGA Graphics Adapter. At some point I turned off hardware acceleration... don't really remember why... and I've turned it back on... Unfortunately, when I recently queried to see how it was set, it said it was on; but, the games like solitaire say that it is off and I can no longer run videos. The driver is up-to-date. I'm pretty sure games and video worked after I upgraded to windows 7... just a bit slower. Due to space considerations I deleted window-old before I realized that I needed to stay on XP so I can't go back. Does anyone know how I can make this work right again?

2) Also, my 802.11 b wireless LAN adapter no longer works (I didn't need it until recently but having it available now would help) because I can't find a driver for it under windows 7. It's an ActionTec device, I think. Any ideas?

3) Since I wiped out window-old, going back to XP is not an easy option. I can transfer all my data to my server, wipe the computer and reinstall XP... I think. Any thoughts?

I'm not particularly knowledgeable in things hardware/operating system so please be patient with me

Thanks,
Al

You are 4 or 5 generations of software, past what the T23 was designed for. Attempting to run it is not going to end well. There are numerous places to get copies of XP from, if you have a clean serial. 1 gig of memory is not going to do XP justice though. Windows 2000 Pro will run like a bat out of h3ll on that machine.

My suggestion is to pick up a T30 if you want to run XP worth a darn.

YMMV

Asking a T23 to run Windows 7 is like trying to play a huge, modern online video game over the internet... on a Dial-up connection. With a 28k modem.

The video driver probably stopped working or... never worked in the first place, because I doubt Windows 7 has a driver for the SuperSavage graphics that does any better than vga.dll. You might be able to find a driver for your Wi-Fi that works, but it'd take a whole lot of hunting.

I know going back to XP will be a bit of a hassle, but sticking with 7 on a machine like this will be an even greater hassle, especially if you use it on any sort of basis.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...
