T30 having issues with Cisco Aironet wifi card

#1 Post by Ziewvater » Wed Mar 13, 2013 6:55 pm

I've recently come into the possession of a T30 that had a Linksys WPC54G adapter. While this works great to access the internet, I wanted to try putting in a mini PCI wireless card to avoid having a piece jutting out from my computer.

I got a Cisco Aironet MPI350 since I had heard about non-signed cards causing the thinkpad BIOS to throw an error when starting up, and wanted to avoid that. The computer loads up just fine with the card, and installs the drivers automatically, and reports that the card is working fine.

When I try to connect to my wireless network, however, I am greeted with an error message stating "Windows was unable to find a certificate to log ou on to the network <network name>"

I've tried searching around for solutions to this issue, but the only thing I have seen anyone say is to disable the IEEE 802.1x authentication for the network, which did not work. Does anyone here have any ideas what I might be able to do to get this computer connected?

Welcome to the forum.
You need to get rid of that antique and get an IBM-approved wifi card , like the Intel 2200BG here, which also has in IBM P/N or FRU number: http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Lenovo-Thin ... 0855286512
Otherwise, you need to get tho NO-1802 hack after which you can use any MiniPCI wifi card.

RBS, I think he is fighting something a little different:
Windows was unable to find a certificate to log.........................
http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/windows- ... e-network/
I ran into this on my sisters "super wham bam thank you ma'am" network. It was more trouble than it was worth, and I changed one of her WAP's to let everyone else connect that was having certificate issues.

However, I agree with RBS, get a real WiFi card.

Thanks for the replies.

To clarify, I am not having a NO-1802 issue with this card. The computer boots just fine and recognizes the card without any such issues.

Additionally, I have already attempted to disable the IEEE 802.1x authentication with the method described in the link jronald posted, but came across a separate problem after that. After disabling the authentication, when I attempt to connect to the network the entered password I receive the following message
The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 to 26 hexadecimal characters.
I have verified that the password I entered fulfills these requirements and that it is indeed the network password. I'm wondering if the wifi card is simply too old and is not compatible with the WPA2 protocol, but I don't really know anything about wireless protocols. Do you guys happen to know if this is a possibility? Is that what you mean when you're saying I should get a "real" WiFi card?

Okay, will do. Is there any reason in particular why this cisco card is so bad? Is it just outdated, or is there another reason?

The answer to your question in no particular order is yes.

Anyway,

This card will work fine, Im not connected with this seller, it just happens to be a card that will work fine.

The 2200bg works splendidly. I just installed one in my t30. It was a working pull from a t4-something. I have an aironet car as well and for the life of me i cant get it to work. Just burn it ot something and replace it with a proper wifi card.

The cisco car was crap when it was new sometime in the middle ages and its even worse now. Dorsnt support any type of modern encryption either. Just a rubbish card overall. Which is weird, because cisco makes pretty solid stuff.

The same applies here too: get a 2200BG (or 2915ABG) for your T30.
You still need the NO-1802 hack first, before you insert the new card.
