W700 battery problem

#1 Post by Medessec » Mon Mar 18, 2013 5:35 am

I recently got a replacement battery for my W700, and the battery seems to hold a decent charge, as it charged fully to 100%, and Windows reads it nicely. However-when I discharge the battery, it's only when I leave the computer idle, or give little input that the computer burns down the battery appropriately. Estimates reflect a good battery, showing 1-2 hours battery life.

Running only on battery, doing absolutely anything that may make the computer break any sweat: move the mouse a lot, start a 3D game up, open a web browser and browse modern content, start Folding@Home, etc., the computer will suddenly and abruptly shut down, as if it was unplugged with no battery inserted. And trying to turn it back on(pressing the power button) after this does nothing. You need to plug the computer back in, and then it'll start, and work perfectly fine.

Does this sound like a problem with the battery? Or could this be an issue with the actual laptop? I had another battery before this one, and I returned it because it worked for a day or two, but then didn't seem to hold any charge(instant power down when I unplugged the laptop.) Is there a common issue I should know about?
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

sound like a generic battery that you are using, and this is a common problem with these generic battery cells.

So the only way to completely avoid this issue is to buy a NOS or other Lenovo-approved/genuine battery?

I'll have to look some more, but if it's just the battery, then that's good news for me.

Unless the charging light stays on when the machine is shut off and unplugged, you're good.
