X31 does not power up

#1 Post by lumenite » Tue Mar 19, 2013 8:53 am

Hello,
I had enjoyed my Thinkpad X31 for many years.
It has been my companion. It was my faithful workhorse and joyful entertainer.
However, it seems dead now.

Recently, my X31 was undergoing LCD inverter problem.
So, I bought the part from ebay and tried to replace mine with it.
But my try failed.
To make matters worse, after my trying to repair, my X31 does not power up at all.

I took away battery and HDD and plug in.
Interestingly, the battery indicator below LCD is yellow (yellow+green, actually).
I think it should be green when plugged in without battery.
Anyway, when I push the start button, nothing happens.
No fan, no other led comes up. even Power on LED does not turn on.
My laptop seems completely dead.
What can I do at this moment?
always welcome any idea.
Thank you.

Try booting the motherboard with 1 stick of ram on a external monitor and post your results
IBM Thinkpad A31 2.0GHz Pentium 4, 768MB RAM, 40GB HDD and a ATI 7500 16MB shimmed
Lenovo T420 4236-PA8: WiFi card replaced with a Broadcom one (fixes most DPC latency), 64GB Crucial M4 SSD added as OS drive, original HDD in a DVD to HDD caddy.

Sadly, I have no external monitor.
The battery indicator ought to be off when battery is removed.
But mine is on when plugged in, strangely.
Something wrong goes.

I tried to boot with 1 memory or without memory.
But no beep, no led on for any moment, no fan.
Literally nothing happens.

I am sure that my ac adapter is okay because I am using it with another Thinkpad.

Thank you for your concern.

Can't be of any more assistance than what was given already, but I do have 2 nice X31 machines for sale.
X31 2885-PWU 1.60GHz (still with original box).
X31 2672-REU 1.60GHz.
PM me if interested.

Try reseating all connectors and leave 1 ram stick and the fan connected and see if it does anything?

Indeed. I'd tend to believe that one or more fuses on the board are blown.
I tried to boot with 1 memory or without memory.
But no beep, no led on for any moment, no fan.
Literally nothing happens.
If the machine doesn't beep when all the RAM is removed, the board is most likely as good as dead.

Good luck.

If I get a new board, is it not difficult to replace it for dead one?
Since I am not sure that the rest of parts are okay, I am afraid of buying it.

Then buy a barebone X31, and transplant your known good parts into it...

Swapping the board itself isn't the most difficult thing to do, though.

One of the great things about Thinkpads is the documentation (maintenance manual) and forum support that is available. It's not that difficult, just follow the manual step by step. This forum is also a most valuable source of knowledge.

Thank you all.
After buying another one, I recovered my system.
Buying a used one is one of the cheapest and easiest way in case of repairing the old computer. :)
