Hard Drive Upgrade?
Hello,
I own a R52 1848-W2S currently running with a 100GB IDE internal hard drive and would like to upgrade to one of the much larger internal SATA drives.
I would like to upgrade to the largest SATA type drive (320GB or higher) as possible.
I've read in posts on these forums that some T4x series owners and others have used internal adapter boards connected to larger internal SATA type drives on their older Thinkpads successfully.
Has anyone successfully used a large capacity internal SATA, SATA 1, or SATA 2 type drive with an adapter board on an R52 series Thinkpad?
If so could you recommend which converters/adapter board models work best and which SATA model hard drives you use them on?
TIA

Re: Hard Drive Upgrade?
Nobody on this forum has used a SATA drive with an adapter in a T43 or R52.
Those are the X41 boys/girls.
For T43/R52 with ATI graphics (like yours) there's a much better solution: the SATA mod.
After which you can put up to a 1TB SATA hard disk in your R52!

Re: Hard Drive Upgrade?
Recently got a T40. I no longer have any IDE drives in my stable. So, I took the HDD caddy from one of my T61 and swap it with the CD drive on the T40. In the caddy I inserted a 320 GB WD SATA II HDD that I had lying around. Loaded Win 7 via USB onto the HDD and everthing works perfectly. The main drive bay is empty. ATTO benchmark on the HDD is around 75-80ish MB/s which is about what I expected from a PATA to SATA Ultrabay device.

Would a DVD to sata adapter work in a a31? (For a ssd)
IBM Thinkpad A31 2.0GHz Pentium 4, 768MB RAM, 40GB HDD and a ATI 7500 16MB shimmed
Lenovo T420 4236-PA8: WiFi card replaced with a Broadcom one (fixes most DPC latency), 64GB Crucial M4 SSD added as OS drive, original HDD in a DVD to HDD caddy.

You need a different one for UltraBay 2000, they're available on eBay.ganon11000 wrote:Would a DVD to sata adapter work in a a31? (For a ssd)
Good for storage *if* your machine decides to recognize them, atrocious transfer speeds. YMMV.

I'll stick with my 5400 rpm drive and hopefully migrate to Compact Flash soon

Re: Hard Drive Upgrade?
Thanks for the reply RBS10000.
The option to mod looks interesting but not worth the cost and hassle for myself at this time.
Would you know what the largest capacity 7200 rpm hard drive I could use in this laptop?
Also, I read this http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=85862 referencing this http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 2&start=30 mentioning
Could you clarify what was being referenced in that thread?
Was it an adapter/convertor board of some sort that could be used with an R52 or was it about something else entirely?
I read through it but couldn't make sense out of it.
TIA

All of that stuff works on T42, but T43 doesn't play nice with these adapters because if its internal SATA-to-PATA converter chip. Also, I read this http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=85862 referencing this http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 2&start=30 mentioning This 1.8" SATA to 2.5" IDE converter thread can also be applied to un-modded T43/R52.

With the T43, the choices are really simple:
a) Stick with PATA drives
b) Convert the machine and watch it fly...see mine here:

Re: Hard Drive Upgrade?
thx for the reply ajkula66. I saw a few 120GB 7200rpm IDE drives out on eBayhttp://www.ebay.com/itm/2-5-Seagate-120 ... ac28%20%20 but didn't know what the increment factors on capacities were to search for a larger 7200rpm IDE drives.
As I mentioned the mod looks really nifty but not a cost effective choice for myself right now.
Also as noted I have an R52 1848-W2S. Do you think that one would work with what I referred to in the quote above?

Re: Hard Drive Upgrade?
I've seen these before but can't actually recall that Seagate made such a drive...although it's been a long time since any of these were produced.bananaheadache wrote:thx for the reply ajkula66. I'm not sure I understand your math, though...you're willing to spend $105 on a NOS Seagate, but not willing to spend less on a mod that will allow you to run *any* SATA HDD or SSD?
No. T43 and R52 are twins from the electronics standpoint and whatever applies to one when it comes to SATA-to-PATA converters applies to the other one as well.

Does anyone think this adapter off of eBay would work with an R52. If not could you please explain? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Serial-ATA-SATA ... 1c264e5575

I have withdrawn this statement, which I must have made while under the influence...This 1.8" SATA to 2.5" IDE converter thread can also be applied to un-modded T43/R52.
These adapters do NOT work in aT43/R52. Period.

Transfer speeds are pretty bad with these adapters, you're better off getting a newer PATA HDD as a boot drive and place it in the main bay.
Use the SATA adapter for storage only.
