Battery storage, when and where?

#1 Post by erp52 » Fri Mar 29, 2013 4:14 pm

I have a T43, Windows7. Planning to buy a new battery from Anker. I rarely use my unit, maybe 2 or 3 times a year when I go on a holiday. So, should I take out the battery and store it somewhere? I heard a refrigerator is a good place. Or should I just leave it in? Plugged or unplugged into a regular ac socket? Ed

Everyone has a different view on this topic so I will give you mine .... leave the battery in the laptop and leave it plugged in.

Cold kills batteries, heat kills batteries, too many cycles kills batteries.

I have an original T22 battery from 2003 that only has 22 cycles on it. It has almost always been plugged in. It was discharged to shut-off by a grandchild recently. After being plugged in again and allowed to fully charge, the battery still shows 95% of original design capacity.

Age is the biggest killer of Lithium-Ion batteries even in the best of environmental conditions. I found Sanyo cells were the worst, Panasonic is the best and LGC is pretty good. It's pretty much luck of the draw what cell you get.

If I don't use my laptop batteries, camera batteries, cell phone batteries, power tool batteries, etc for an extended period of time, I'll take it out of the unit and let it sit on a shelf at room temp. Storing in a hot environment is generally considered not good for it but don't know to much about freezing.

YMMV
