X230 Tablet, trackpoint dead.... settings greyed out
X230 Tablet, trackpoint dead.... settings greyed out
Very upsest with Lenovo...
I just received a brand new x230 tablet in the mail. Opened it up only to discover that the trackpoint does not work. When I go to the ultranav mouse properties, the ultranav is greyed out and you cannot enable it. Called teck support... less than helpful... did the usual... reinstall drivers, update bios to no success. I have next day onsite service so they sent out a teck... All they did was replace keyboard which again did not work.... Now they are ordering a new system board.
Anyone else have the issue where you cannot get the trackpoint working on a brand new laptop? Any tips or tricks... ?
Pleaseeee help...

You did check that it's enabled in the BIOS, right?

Yes, it is enabled...basketb wrote:You did check that it's enabled in the BIOS, right?

Then replacing the system board seems a reasonable thing to do.

I have my own trackpoint problem; how did you call tech support?

I have seen a similar problem. One thing that I have noted is that it is on a single account (I created a new account and the trackpoint works fine) which makes me thing it is in the environment. It also looks like the trackpoint works momentarily when I log in which makes me think it is something in the startup. I tried:
1 - Removing everything in my startup folder
2 - Running msconfig and stopping in the startup tab.
Neither worked. I would imagine that services etc. should be the same between users and that this would not be a problem. Is anyone aware of anything else that might be started behind a user's back? Two updates were applied yesterday. One was a windows defender update, but the other sounds more suspicious:
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2840149)
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=281927
I haven't tried backing it out yet, but it would seem very strange that it would affect a single user.
All my best,
Marie

Re: X230 Tablet, trackpoint dead.... settings greyed out
tl;dr: I had similar issues where mouse stops working. In my case, it was after undocking from a Ultrabase with a USB mouse. Thing that solved my issue: be sure to actually hit the undock button on the base before disconnecting as it smoothens out transition between usb and built in hardware (or something like that).
I've been plagued by this issue lately as well. In my case, when upon undocking, the touchpad and red button were disabled, and the only way of bringing them back was to do something with the driver. Luckily I have a x230t, so I just used the pen to navigate to the control panel and either update or roll back the driver; it didn't really matter what I did, either of those "woke up" the driver. When I realized that it was happening after undocking (I normally throw my laptop in my bag when I undock and won't be using it for a few hours, hence the correlation was hard to notice), I started to draw some connections. On my dock, I use an external USB mouse. There exists an option in the registry to disable the built in mice when an external one is detected. I made sure on my computer that this is off, and indeed while the computer is connected to the usb mouse, the trackpads still work. I would recommend checking that this is disabled because I think it might lead to driver failure if it mistakenly thinks there's a external mouse connected. I used to be more diligent about actually hitting the undock button before physically undocking the laptop, but have started to stop doing that. I mention this because I think that this is the source of my driver failure. When you don't undock properly, there must be some failure of communication between the hardware connected to the dock and the computer (and maybe something to do with a bug in reading the value in the registry that auto disables the mice). Consequently, there is some mysterious bug in the Synaptics driver that causes the whole thing to disable itself when this happens.
I know that not everybody uses a dock, but if people do and have this same issue, it might be something worth trying. Hopefully this is the end of the dead mouse bug for me and for at least one other person on the internet.
